Re: Prenatal bloods??? Are they needed
I asked for a full work up at my TTC appointment with my obgyn. This included screening for Cystic Fibrosis and Fragile X.
ETA: The basic blood work up was to check hormone levels and thyroid functioning.

I did as well-- I got the full work up for the panel of diseases that are hereditary. There are some additional ones, like a gene for mental retardation for example.
I actually got my results today-- and I am all normal!

I never heard of a test that tests a gene for mental retardation BEFORE a child is conceived. That sounds pretty general as so many disorders/disabilities are associated with mental retardation. Do you know the specific name of the test? I am very curious.
For me, the tests were necessary. I had the Ashkenazi Jewish panel of testing given to people of Eastern European Jewish descent before we got married. It tested for:
Tay-Sachs disease Canavan disease, Familial dysautonomia Niemann-Pick (type A) disease Fanconi anemia (group C) Bloom syndrome Gaucher disease (the non-neuronopathic type) Mucolipidosis type IV, and Glycogen storage disease type 1.

Re: Prenatal bloods??? Are they needed
Leslie, I am not sure of the name-- I had all the same tests as you, and then my doc mentioned a couple that are given to everyone on top of the eastern european panel-- and I specifically remember the mental retardation one because I was surprised that you could test for that. I didn't get written results, but I will let you know if I find out the name.
