That's what I thought she was saying. I'm in shock someone would actually believe that was right. I thought I must have misread. Chat Icon
That is insane.

I didn't get the vibe that she was trying to push her feelings onto anyone else, just stating her beliefs, and how she, herself, felt about it. I don't necessarily agree with her, but i don't see the reason to be shocked over it, or to tell someone that their beliefs are wrong. Chat Icon

I empathize with your difficulty in getting pregnant. The Church disagrees with IVF for both the unused embryos reason as well as the fact that your baby is not being conceived NATURALLY. you and your husband require SCIENCE to intervene, and so it is not a 100% natural process. the humans take the control and not God.

So you agree with the churches stand on IVF?

Yes, if you read her previous posts she does not believe we should be interefering. According to the Catholic Church I should have adopted instead of trying IVF.

It's scary how many people share this opinion. Like IVF and infertility isn't hard enough, you have people telling you that you shouldn't be trying to do what you know in your heart is right. If I wasn't so tired from all the meds I am on in order to support this "artifical" attempt at a pregnancy, I would be much more verbal.

That is insane.

So after 6 pages where no one resorted to name calling you have to start? It is her opinion, she didn't call anyone insane for their opinions. Why do you have to take it to that level?

Because I find what she said extremely offensive and I'm sure quite a few ladies on the Fertility board would as well.
I disagree with a lot of things with the Catholic church as I stated before but this one I cannot keep quiet about.

So? I have found alot of what is posted on this thread offensive, as I am sure others have. But we all have a right to an opinion and were trying to keep this civilized.

ITA...I thought this thread was civilized..I too was offended by some things posted BUT everyone is entitled to their own opinion and she was stating hers

"That is insane"

I think that is a pretty civilized statement. Saying that IFV is wrong when there are many ladies desperately trying to concieve... I think my response was quite mild in proportion to her statement.

This will be my last post on this... I am NOT critcizing anyone. I was just saying that the Catholic Church says its wrong. Take it up with the Vatican, not me. I do not judge anyone for what they need to do for themselves and their families. The topic came up and I addressed it. Maybe not in the best way... it's hard to even try to talk about something so intense and personal on a computer. And just as many of the people on this board choose to do IVF, I should have the same opprtunity to say I wouldn't do it/or don't do it, whatever the case may be when I get to that stage in my marriage.

There were MANY things that were posted on this thread against the Church that I was highly offended by and I didn't slam anybody else. I don't see how this can be a FORUM and people can't express their opinion??? I feel like if you have any true belief as a Catholic on this board.. you get utterly slammed. and this has not been the first time for me.

well i do disagree with this - we required science, so i guess we went against the church

oh well...

and a BIG pet peeve of mine are people who get PG through artificial means, who believe in God, yet discount God's role in making the miracle happen.

They're like "God didn't get you PG - science did"

I'm sorry - but I firmly believe that God puts everyone here for a reason, even if it's to set a horrible example.

And in that vain, he put the specialists and the RE's on this earth and gave them the talent to take the knowledge on infertility and help people get PG.

THANK YOUChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I absolutely believe God has been involved in this process. I have grown and learned a lot about not taking the miracle of life for granted. But I will never believe He did not want me to have children and that is why there are RE's in my world.

I don't see how anyone can saywith certainty that GOD didn't GIVE us the geniuses who could give us technology to help people have babies. And if you're putting an adult, or for argument's sake a premature baby on a respirator, aren't you artificially keeping them alive? Isn't preventing death the same in terms of playing god, as helping life. And if God really didn't want someone to have children, NO amount of IF treatment would work. They're not fool proof.

I'm a big advocate for adoption, and If I had problems TTC, I would probably go that route, but I don't think that's any more natural or any better in God's eyes than IVF. However, just as an adoption advocate I wish more people would consider adoption!

Because you chose not to post your objections and other people did doesn't make them bad. And this thread was about exceptions. I'm sure everyone on this thread could also post all of the things they love about the faith and the church as well.

It seems as though you are accusing others on this thread as not having "true belief"

They better kick me out of my CCD classes, because I don't believe and I am only there to corrupt their children to my wicked questioning ways.

And on the IVF issue (and many of the issues being rbught up here)..this did not exist in Jesus' time, we don't know for certain what he might have said about it.

I read the whole thread, and honestly, i don't know where anyone sees her making accusations about anyone else's beliefs Chat Icon If anything, i found that her posts were very carefully worded. Still, people are sensitive and words get twisted. But, those are people's own feelings that they need to deal with themselves.

Honestly, though, Jen- i don't understand why you teach CCD then? I taught CCD for a while and realized that i didn't have the beliefs that i should to *really* teach the kids. If you don't believe anything that the church teaches, then, imo, you're doing a disservice to yourself and the kids by teaching it.

In answer the first paragraph. She said "if you have true faith you get slammed" implying that not everyone on the thread has true faith.

I was being sarcastic about not teaching CCD. I'm a great teacher and I'm teaching these kids important things. There's an important distinction between not believe in ANYTHING and not believing in EVERYTHING. There is also a distinction between believing in the FAITH and agreeing with Church policy. I also never said I think the church should necessarily change their stance on these issues, just that my personal opinions differ. I don't see that as a problem.

It is also why I chose to teach CCD for YOUNGER kids. I don't have to get into more complicated issues. I will never be able to tell a kid that his gay uncle will burn in hell because I don't believe that, or that we should excommunicate politicians who support abortion rights.

ETA: I think it makes me a better teacher anyway because I don't say "because the church says so" (which I personally had many teachers say) but because I can give well-reasoned arguments about things and I've thought it all through on my own. it's an age old question..is it more valuable to just believe 100% without questioning, or to question everything and still believe? It's just a different approach to faith.

For my part, I'm a rare bird anyway because I believe all (adn you could come with extreme cases to prove me wrong, so maybe most) religions are equally valid ways of understanding the unknown. We only believe what we believe because A) it's what our mom told us and what here mom told her, etc or B) it's what makes sense to us in our lives. There's no proof or reason to believe that Catholicism is more valid than any other religion.

ETA: Because I really feel strongly about this. The church is not infallible. if it were, it would not grow and change. So much of what the church teaches has changed and will change. it is not static. What Jesus has taught us does not change and has not changed and THAT is what I believe in, and THAT is what I teach my kids..which is really why i like teaching younger kids. I can teach them about how amazing God's love is, and I can teach them to pray and I am moulding their faith. It's a wonderful thing. At this age it isn't about rules. the over-arching message is "God Loves Us. God Gave Jesus to us. Jesus Loves us. God is Good" and it's a beautiful message. I love pointing our beautiful things to my kids and and teaching them that God made that and helping them to praise and thank God. I love telling my kids stories from the Bible so that they can feel inspired and know God better. That's the beauty of the religion to me. not the can't shant and won'ts.

Short answer: I was called to.

Long answer is above in my post. Even though I don't believe that Catholicism is more "right" than any other religion, it is my religion and it's a beautiful one and there are many beautiful things to teach. I love teaching kids about our religion..but I don't think all of the Jewish kids in Hebrew school are learning anything less valid. Why is that confusing?

ETA: They think I'm a great teacher and so do I. I'm a lot better than the teachers who told me all about hell, and that Jewish people are "wrong" and only Catholics go to heaven. If someone were to ask me if Catholicism is right, I would say what's important is what you believe in your heart.

And i don't teach the kids about this Jesus dude who may or may not have risen from the dead. I teach them that he DID becuase it is what I believe. but I PERSONALLY acknowledge that other people don't believe this, and that I believe it because it is what I was taught.

It's confusing because you seem to be a skeptic. As a teacher, and a former CCD teacher, I know it can be difficult to teach something you don't necessarily believe, and I was just curious why you would choose to teach religion.

I love teaching kids about our religion..but I don't think all of the Jewish kids in Hebrew school are learning anything less valid. Why is that confusing?

It's confusing because you seem to be a skeptic. As a teacher, and a former CCD teacher, I know it can be difficult to teach something you don't necessarily believe, and I was just curious why you would choose to teach religion.

I'm a person who questions everything, but I absolutely do believe.

I don't KNOW that what i believe is "right" but I also know it doesn't matter. I don't think anyone will be punished for believing in the "wrong" religion. I think it would be naive to think that ANY religion has it down 100% because they have all been formed by people and their cultures and needs.

I think if the leaders of every religion each drew a picture of God, none of them would be the exact likeness of God, but the correct one would be somewhere in the middle, and maybe some are closer than others.

Until I hopefully walk with God someday, I will stick with what i've got because it is a beautiful religion with a lot of truth in it in my belief... but I think god is also so great that there is no way any person can conceive of what s/he/it is. That's why we ahve religion, to put God in terms we can understand.

ETA: DO Catholics actually think "We are right and Jews/Muslims/Pagans/Buddhists are wrong" ???
What about what they have been taught for centuries?

My whole belief about religion stems from a revelation I had when I was 4, and I guess I met someone or heard about someone who was jewish and my mom explained that's someone who doesn't believe in Jesus. And I was comnpletely shocked..but then I was thinking about it and I thought well, if their mommy taught them that, it's not their fault that they're wrong...and the next thought was "what if what my mommy taught me was wrong?" and I realized that there was no way of knowing...so I've felt this way since pre-school.

As my mother says, "What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger." Life isn't always easy and I believe it is with God's grace that we get through.

Your mother is quoting Friedrich Nietzsche, who, ironically, also said "God is dead."
