Another Ghetto question.
Several people mentioned in another thread that they grew up in a "ghetto".
My question is where did you grow up & why do you consider it a ghetto?
Ghetto to me means the old, burned out buildings in the Bronx, drug dealers & squatters.
Is this where people are referring?

I highly doubt it. The word ghetto has been misconstrued.

change the Bronx to East Flatbush and you've got my definition. Well, then we did move on up to a neighborhood that was a bit better... although the crack park across the street wasn't exactly the classiest, nor were the santitation trucks that lined the block, or the people that lived behind said trucks. But, it was a bit safer- it didnt even come close in numbers to the drive-bys in the old neighborhood

I think nowadays the term 'ghetto' is more commonly used when referring to urban areas, whereas the term 'trash' or 'trashy' is more often associated with suburban or rural areas.

my hubby and I are originally from CI too!! But we have had frieneds who lived in Brownsville and that is more of a ghetto-neighborhhod. I agree LI has NO ghetto-neighborhoods, I have been in some neighborhoods when I worked outreach and I can tell you that once you have been in a ghetto-neighborhood you TRULY know it CI is FAR from ghetto.

I guess it is true that everyone has different ideas of what ghetto-neighborhoods are, Ozone park queens does not fit into that category for me, but again i think I have seen the worst of the worst.

My dad was NYPD and he would definitely tell you that his precincts were ghetto. The 73rd and 75th which covered parts of Brownsville, Bushwick and East New York.

i didnt live in the heart of ozone park, not the area close to howard beach at all...i lived about two blocks from east new york brooklyn...close to cityline? do u know of it?
eta : we had to sign petitions against the prostitutes and drug dealers and robberies of the candy stores on atlantic ave. were constant which would be right around the corner from me...not pleasant

Re: Another Ghetto question.
I grew up in Mastic, I don't consider it ghetto but definitely not a place I want to buy a house.
Disclaimer - This is my opinion, no offense to those who live there. My parents and some friends still do. JMO as to where I wouldn't want to live.

Re: Another Ghetto question.
There are parts of Huntington with drug dealers, prostitutes, etc. where I wouldn't walk through at night. It's far from a ghetto.
I guess ghetto, in the modern sense of the word, is subjective.
