Question about the Deed

I got a letter in the mail from the NY record retrieval Inc, asking for $59 for me to get a copy of my deed. IS this legit?

I thought that the Property Deed gets sent to the home owner, and they dont have to pay for it. Am I wrong?

Did you never get a copy after you bought your house?

I don't think this is legit. You can go down to the county recorder and get a copy of your deed for cost of photocopying. Maybe you can call the county clerk and tell them about this letter. Sounds shady!!

I got that letter too and it is just ridiculous. After your deed gets recorded in the county which in Nassau can take awhile (6 months or more) or suffolk (about 1-2 months) your attorney will get the original back. An attorney should send you the original if it was sent to them so you have it for your records. As a previous poster said if you lose the original you can go and get a certified copy of your deed from the county for about $25 or you can get a copy for the cost of photocopying. In all honestly you don't need your deed unless a conflict comes up and you don't need it when you sell because when the title company does a search they will find your deed and it will show that you are in title. I would not give anyone money to get something for you that you should have and if you don't have it call your attorney to verify that he/she received it. It is also possible that the county is taking their time recording it.

Don't fall for that letter! One of my clients at work faxed it over to my office and we looked into it and went to the website and it bought us right to the BBB. You can get a certified copy at the county clerks office

I got it too. It has been sitting on my desk for 3 months! I too went to NC court in Mineola and got a copy for a few bucks I think.

I just got a certified copy of my deed the other day (couldn't find the original....) It cost $5 to the County Clerk.

Just want to say "Thanks" and bump this for anyone else who may get this letter.

I just got the letter today and knowing my DH, he would have just paid it and mailed it in. But b/c I read this post a little while back, I was like when I saw the envelope and sure enough...

I don't need a copy of the deed. The town has it on file.

I saw this on TV. It is legal but you dont need it. These companies are going in to the records since they are public copying homeowners and sending them letters. Its a big scam. You will get your deed but you can also go get it for free.

We got the same letter in the mail yesterday. I think its a come-on. We have the deed to our house. We dont need a copy.
