A different Tipping question
You're invited to a milestone birthday party at a private home. When you get there, there's a hired bartender.
How do you feel about there being a tip jar?

Re: A different Tipping question
I don't think it's a big deal.
ETA: I don't think it is something I would do, but I wouldn't think twice if I saw it done.

Tacky
I agree. If i had a party in my home, I would tip the bartender. I wouldn't expect my guests to.

i'm gathering quotes from vendors for SO's surprise 50th, next year.
all of the bartenders include a tip jar in their quotes, either as an option (with or without and their different prices) or as part of the service. reading that left a bad taste in my mouth. i don't invite people to my house to pay my vendors for me. if i wanted/needed to do that, i wouldn't have the party.
was just wondering what other people thought about it.

I would pay the tip, I would never pass that onto my guests.

A different Tipping question
Is that any different from going to a wedding and there being a tip jar on the bar. I went to a wedding, at a well known NY location, and that was the exact circumstance.

As a party hostess...I would be pissed if the hired bartender put out a tip jar.
As a guest, I would be peeved but probably would not think that much about it.

Re: A different Tipping question
OMG..my sister in law got married at a winery in upstate NY and everything was catered in. The bar staff that my sister in law paid and tipped separately so they wouldt put out a jar, and they did anyway. She went over there and made them remove it...she was PISSED!!!

Re: A different Tipping question
It's often the case that the bartender IS tipped by the host. However, some people also tip themselves, and I think that's ok. Guests shouldn't feel obligated, but if they choose to leave an extra tip, then the bartender deserves it!

A different Tipping question
A tip jar at ANY event is Tacky. ESPECIALLY a wedding/barmitzvah...anywhere that the host is paying them a tip to be there.
TACKY all around.

Re: A different Tipping question
If it's in the contract, doesn't that give the host/ess the opportunity to pay the gratuity themselves?
If that is the case, and the host/ess chooses not to then it is them that is the tacky one if anyone, not the person who is bartending.

A different Tipping question
I am clearly in the minority here but I wouldn't give the tip jar a second thought.
