Taking away paci

Good morning moms,
My DD will be 2 this month. Time to take away her paci. She only uses it during nap and bedtime, but she's very dependent on it. She also gets up a few times a night when she can't find it, so in turn I'm always up finding it in her crib and handing it to her. It's exhausting!

Please share your tips and tricks on making this is smooth as possible. Thanks!

Taking away paci

I did it on his 2nd birthday...I said big boys dont use paci's anymore and I gave him a pillow that night. It was a rough 2-3 nights but never looked back. He also only used it at naps and bedtime but it was super annoying for him to wake up looking for it.

Re: Taking away paci

DD will be 2 in 3 weeks and I'm trying to convince myself to do it then, too. She is a paci addict. Full on addict. I mean, she LOVES that thing. She's gotten better about not using it as much during the day unless she's very tired, but if she had a choice, I think she'd suck on it all day long.

We've been talking about the paci going away. She knows the paci fairy will take her pacis and give her a gift in return. She's expressed interest in having her nails painted, so I'm thinking we may go that route.

Anyway, no advice here b/c my first never took a paci, but just lending my moral support if you do it! Chat Icon

Taking away paci

With my DD, we took it away and that was the end of it. It was not quite as easy with DS. He was only using it for overnight sleep by then because we managed to just stop it at nap time without an issue. Bedtime was very different for him. Ultimately, we snipped the tip off. He was quite upset, crying and saying, "it's broken." This went on for 2-3 nights, with us reminding him that it was broken and we didn't have others. Good luck!!

For my DD hers was attached to a doll. She was only nap time and bed time but for her she would use it to fall asleep then that's it for the rest of the night. We had a dog, I cut off the paci part and told her the dog ate it. She slept with just the stuff animal for a while and that was it.

DS was addicted way more than DD. He had it during the day a lot longer than I ever let DD. I was debating how I was going to be able to do it for him. I was going to cut the tip off but he bit it off himself. I bought him another one (his was also attached to a doll) cause we were beginning potty training and DH thought it would be too much. Well he bit the tip off again a few weeks later and at $15 a piece I wasn't buying him another one. So just like that it was gone. He wined a little but got over it. I let him keep the doll but he was no interested in it.

We gradually snipped the tip more and more every 3 days or so. Eventually she just didn't bother putting it on her mouth. Took about 1.5 weeks. She was pacifier obsessed before then. We also did it at 2.

DD used a Wubbanub and I did the same thing right before her second bday. If your DC has a lovey of some sort I think it eases the transition.

Also just went through this with an all day paci addict. Went cold turkey and we thought it would be torture but like my DD he was fine without it in 2 days. We were shocked at how easy it was.

The anxiety leading up to it for you is worse than it is on them!

Did she cry a lot? I'm thinking about snipping them...
