Taking away the paci ...
I really want to take away the paci before DS turns one. He only uses it for naps now, and he will spit it out in the morning when I ask "can I have your binky?"
So what do I do CIO? is there a intermediary stage? Is it as hard now as it would be 6 months from now? Or is doing it now better than later?
he has a lovey which he sleeps with, I don't mind that but I worry about the binky messing with his teeth and stuff
TIA!

I'd just go cold turkey and let him CIO. It might not be as bad as you think!
I think the earlier the better.
I know it's totally different, but I weaned Loey from BFing at 1 year and it took 2 weeks but I swear, it's like he has completely forgotten.

Re: Taking away the paci ...
I did it cold turkey. My DD only used it for naps. It was quick (but she was only 6 months old). She cried for 2 days for about 5 minutes and then would fall asleep. After that, she never missed it!

Minority here, but I never took it away. DS# 1 had his until he was almost 4. Only used it for naps and bedtime, but just could not sleep without it. When he was ready to give it up, he did.
He is now 7 years old and has BEAUTIFUL teeth

Re: Taking away the paci ...
I took DS' away at 17 months. He used it for naps and nighttime sleep only by that point. I just let him CIO. First night it was a while, but it was much less the second day for nap and nighttime, and then that was it. So it really wasn't bad. Although I do feel that even 7 months later, he still doesn't fall asleep the same as he did when he had it. It used to be instantaneous and so easy. Sometimes I wish I could give it back, but obviously I wouldn't at this point.

Re: Taking away the paci ...
My friend cut a little hole in the nipple & everyday would cut it larger & larger until her DD didn't want it anymore.
funny, I actually tried to give DS the paci but he favored his thumb instead, which will be my nightmare to try & make him stop.

Re: Taking away the paci ...
Whichever way you choose to do it, do it soon!! Both of my DDs still use a paci and they are 1 and 2 years old. They were both sick last week so they had them all day long, when I had them using them only at nap and bedtime. There have been a lot of tears around here lately since they are now better and we are going back to the crib only rule!

Re: Taking away the paci ...
DD had hers until she was 2.5...she had it only for naps and bed time from the time she was crawling until it was taken away. i ended up cutting off the end and gave it to her...she looked at it and said it was broken...she wanted to see if everynight for a few nights and since it was still broken she didnt want it.
just for the record...she is 3 and has the straightest teeth on a toddler i have ever seen

I sort of feel this way as well. My kids never took to a love or anything like that. But they love their binkies to sleep with and in the car. That is the only time they use them. I think I am planning to take them when I can explain that they need to go to new babies now that they are big boys. I also did this with bottles. They ha dtheirs until right before their 2nd birthday and I took them and replaced them with sippies-no issues at all.

This is kind of how I feel too. DD is 20 months. She doesn't understand WHY she can't have it. All she knows is that it makes her happy and helps her sleep. Who I am to deprive her of that. I don't have it in me just yet.

Re: Taking away the paci ...
DS is 22 months and yesterday was day 1 of no paci. It took him an hour to go down for a nap and an hour to get him down at night. Hoping today goes better!!
