How did you tell your older kids about your pregnancy?

DS1 was 3 when we told him he was going to be a big brother. We just sat him down one night and told him. This time my boys are 8 and 4.5 and I'd like to do something a little more creative than just blurting it out.

DS2 actually started talking about the baby in my belly, rubbing my stomach and kissing the baby several times per week starting from a few days before my BFP until about 7 or 8 weeks. He hasn't really said anything since then and I never confirmed anything with him. It was funny because he only did that when it was the 2 of us together. My kids should be excited as they've been asking for another sibling for a while.

How did you reveal your pregnancy and what was DC's reaction?

my oldest is 5 and youngest is 2.5, so younger than yours. i didn't do anything extra special so i don't have any creative ideas for you, but i did make sure to take a video of me telling them and seeing their reaction. i'm so glad i did because my older son's reaction was better than i had anticipated.

No specific ideas but I'd hold off on a reveal for a bit if you can. Kids don't really have a concept of time and 9 months can feel like years. I'll be waiting till 5 months at the minimum, for other reasons as well.

Honestly, I'm surprised my 8 year old hasn't commented on the size of my stomach yet. It's getting really tough to hide it at work especially later in the day. There's no way I can hide it for too much longer.

My 8 year old completely understands time and I'd say my 4.5 year old has a decent understanding of it although anything in the past is usually referred to as last day. Chat Icon He will talk about how he's 4.5 now, when he's going to be 5 (in July) and that he'll be going to K when he's 5. He also talks about other sports that he's going to start playing at 5. We talk about the timing of upcoming visits with family or other plans that are weeks away.

I had an early level 2 with DS2 at 16-17 weeks because of questionable first trimester and quad screening results. We didn't share the news with DS1 until after that, but he was only 3. I know it will be different with another sibling, but they've been aware of impending arrivals of cousins from pretty early on including one who is due 3 weeks before me.

I'm 12.5 weeks now and keeping my fingers crossed that the cell free DNA results come back good. I have another OB appointment at almost 14 weeks and will probably share around the 14 week mark if things are going well.

How did you tell your older kids about your pregnancy?

My 3 year old knew before dh did. I took the test and ran out telling her she was going to be a big sister. I had her wear a big sister shirt and yell surprise to dh at bedtime. In hindsight I should have waited because there were some issues in the beginning but she is over the moon happy. She didn't tell anyone but school because we told her it was our secret.

Congrats!!

We told our kids (6 yo and 4 yo) that I was pregnant at about 16 weeks. We waited until after the NIPT genetic test came back OK. Yes, they knew mommy was getting a belly and my 4 yo (he was then 3) would make comments about the baby in my tummy. We just did not confirm.

I really advise people to wait to tell kids. We had a MC after telling our kids, and seeing my 6 yo cry because we lost the baby was one of the most horrible experiences of my life.

Thanks! I had an ectopic last year and had emergency surgery. My kids just knew that I had a boo boo belly and I couldn't pick up my younger one for a while. My younger one, who was 3.5 at the time, actually asked a few weeks later if I had a baby in my belly and it died. I was floored, but didn't acknowledge it. Between and his comments during this pregnancy, he seems to be in tune with something.

I don't feel comfortable saying anything before the first trimester is over, but I would like to include them once I know things look ok.

Exactly.. and this is my reason for wanting to wait as well. 5 months is the anatomy scan and offers so much more info than the first tri screening. I think it's really going to vary by experience and comfort level. I had a loss at 17 weeks, so for me, that's what I base my decision on.

I totally get that. Our experiences and personalities play a major role in our comfort level. I have a family member who shares her news very early with her older child even after a loss at the end of the first trimester. I don't feel comfortable doing that, but I'm okay with sharing early on in the second trimester.

Unfortunately a loss can happen at any time. I know so much more can be seen at the anatomy scan, but I did have as detailed of a sono as I could at 12+ weeks with MFM. If things continue to look good, I'd like my kids to be part of this experience. I've been fairly disconnected because of what I went through with my last pregnancy, but I want to be able to relax and enjoy this as baby #3 will be my last. I hope that seeing the excitement through my children's eyes will help calm my nerves and help me emotionally.

We just sat them down and told them...they were 4 and almost 6...my older dd was devastated and cried for hours! It was totally not what we expected! They eventually came around, but it wasn't the sunshine and rainbows we anticipated.

How did you tell your older kids about your pregnancy?

My son had just turned 5 and we told him on Halloween before we went to the grandparents houses. I was 8 weeks and we wanted to tell the families. He was more interested in his candy. However, we let him tell the families and he loved doing that! Huge smile before he said anything.
