Telling older kids about pregnancy

When did you tell your older child you were pregnant and how?

I'm almost 13 weeks and we haven't told anyone except our parents and siblings...we had our NT scan today and the doctor said everything looks good from the scan. Should we keep waiting or tell our kids? They are 4 and 5.

Any creative ideas on how to tell them?

My DD is 4, we told her right away she was going to be a big sister and she comes to all of my OB apps and sonos. We liked the idea of including her from the beginning so she had lots of time to get use to get use to the idea and so she could be excited with us. Chat Icon

I think it's all about your comfort level at this point. You are right around where I was when we told our kids--they were 4.5 and just under 3 at the time. We gave them the sonogram pictures (the tech had printed them each out their own copies with "Hi K...!" and "Hi A...!" on them) and asked what they thought it was. My older DD copped on and was thrilled; the younger one could not have cared less. Chat Icon

Good luck!

I have a 15 year old ss and 6 year old dd and we told them when I was about 8.5 weeks. It was thanksgiving and my husband got them shirts. SS said Big Brother squared (the little 2 i can't type on here) and DD said Big Sister. It took them awhile to figure it out. They wore them to thanksgiving dinner and thats how we told the rest of the family.

DS doesn't have any siblings but my sister is 20 years younger than me. She was 5 when we found she was going to be an aunt. We told her when we told my parents. She never came to appointments with me but I kept her involved every other way possible. Now that DS is here she is over the moon about him.

We told my DD (4.75 at the time) when I was 12 weeks (after the NT scan). On Easter, I wrapped up a sono picture in a frame and gave her a book about a new baby.

My sister told my nephew after the NT scan as well. She got him a Big Brother shirt and had him figure it out. He was 7 at the time.
It was so cute!
