Dumbest Q about carseat and winter coats... What do you do?
Now that winter's here, how do you go about keeping your kid warm ON THE WAY TO THE CAR? DS is a year old. Since I have to remove DS's thick winter coat to strap him into the car seat once we're in the car, how do I keep him warm on our way to the car in the morning? We park the car in the driveway.

DD has a poncho I throw over her, then take it off once we're in the car. When we get out, same thing- take her out of the car seat, put poncho on, get out of car. It's not super warm (it's like a thick sweater)but she's usually only outside for a few seconds.
If its really cold I'll put a thin fleece on under the poncho- the Children's Place ones are thin enough that the car seat straps can get nice and snug.

Most of the time I have my kids in just a fleece. It's only a few feet so they're not going to freeze just getting to the car. If it's really horrible out I put the outer coat over but unzipped (they have 2 piece systems). At a year old though, my kids didn't even wear those systems except for playing in the snow. They usually wore the carter's sherpa jacket just for running out going places.

Re: Dumbest Q about carseat and winter coats... What do you do?
I have sweatshirts with a hood that they wear over their regular shirt to sit in the car. But going to & from the car it depends how cold it is. I have a warm blanket I keep in the car for each kid & sometimes we'll run into the house I'll just wrap them in that. Other times if it's very cold I just put their coat on, walk them to the car, then take it off as I'm strapping them in. If it's not that cold out I'll just have their warm hoodies on with hat, gloves, scarf, etc. just for extra warmth.

I just have them in a warm but thin fleece. We just run out to the car like that but if it's like below 0, then a blanket.

Gap makes a great winter coat that is really warm but very thin. I've been using that with DS for years and it works great. I just make sure I don't loosen the car seat straps from the summer/ fall so I know they're still as tight as they were then.

Sometimes a blanket, sometimes I have them put their coats over them like a blanket.

Summer Infant makes ponchos with snaps in the back so that you can have the back open to slip the car seat straps on them without having to take it off. It's fleece and cozy. No, not the warmest but does the trick. On super cold or nasty days (like today), I grab an extra blanket or two and throw it over them.

I bought the kids patagonia jackets last spring when they were on clearance. Before that they would be in fleeces. They only ever really used a bulky winter coat for playing outside in the snow.

i warm up the car and put them in a fleece and hat. i carry their heavy winter coat for when we get out of the car. if they complain they are cold when first getting into the car, i drape the heavy coat over them after they are buckled in.

Dumbest Q about carseat and winter coats... What do you do?
at that age, i would just run DS out to the car in a thin fleece jacket (that was thing enough to use in the car seat) and a hat on. having a hat really helps keep the heat in their body. then i would have his winter coat with me to put on. i really like the Children's Place 3-in-1 coats because of this... but I'm not sure what size they start at...

I start the car ahead of time to heat it up. DD is usually just in a fleece and hat. I wrap a blanket around her if it's really cold to walk to the car and then put the blanket on top of her after she's strapped in.

Dumbest Q about carseat and winter coats... What do you do?
I have remote start so I pre-warm the car (which is SO helpful). My 3 year old puts her regular winter coat on, I take it off when I put her in the seat and if she's cold she puts it on backwards after shes strapped in. My 6 month old (she's in a convertible car seat), I put a hat on and wrap in her coat or a blanket and quickly put her in. I keep extra blankets in the car if needed.

This is the video I saw online last year that shows why you shouldn't strap kids in with their coat: http://www.today.com/video/car-seat-alert-a-winter-coat-could-endanger-your-child-585502787887
I didn't know until someone told me about the video. DS was always in the carrier before that so I'm glad I found out before it could have been a problem.

They wear their coats and then I take them off in the car and buckle them in. I put them back on them before we get out of the car. I also keep two small blankets in a basket in the trunk for them to throw over them until the car warms up completely or long car trips.
