Silly question about carseat and winter coat
This is a silly question, but What do you girls do in the winter putting dc into a carseat with a coat? It's really difficult getting her in with a coat. I can barely buckle the straps. What do you do? Use a blanket, take the coat off? Help!!!

Silly question about carseat and winter coat
Puffy coats and car seats do not mix!! they interfere with the proper alignment and adjustment of the straps.
An installer once showed me a good way to check, and to give a visual if a coat was going to be safe or not.
1) Put your DC in their seat with the coat on and fix the straps to where you think they are good.
2) Then just unbuckle and take your DC out WITHOUT loosening the straps to help.
3) take the coat off your DC and buckle them back into the carseat WITHOUT ADJUSTING THE STRAPS.
4) take note of how much extra "give" there is and how much the straps need to be adjusted. No more then two fingers should be able to fit.
In an accident all the puffiness will compress and if the straps have the extra give it can cause a very bad outcome. I take Ds's coat off, put him in seat and put the coat on him backwards after strapping him in. theres also another trick that you unzip the coat, leave it on but pull it out from interfering with the straps. You buckle dc in with the straps directly touching them so they can be snug enough, and then you can close or ziper the coat on top of the staaps. I have done this with ds too if I didnt warm the car up or we are just going for a short trip.

Re: Silly question about carseat and winter coat
no puffy coats in carseats, ever! Very dangerous. Take coat off. Thin fleece coats/sweatshirts work great to keep warm without adding bulk that effect the straps.

Re: Silly question about carseat and winter coat
I usually take the coat off and pump the heat before leaving to warm up. If I don't take off the coat I have the 3 in 1 jacket from target. I take off the outer shell and leave the fleece lining on. The straps should be against their body like during the summer. You could also open thr jacket and adjust the straps so they are against the body but my dd is uncomfortable like that.

Re: Silly question about carseat and winter coat
Thank you!!!! I figured it couldn't be safe. But does that go for all coats or only puffy ones?
I'm glad I asked this question.

If you do the coat check I wrote in my other post you will see if you are able to get the straps tight enough with the coat on.

Re: Silly question about carseat and winter coat
Once in the car, we take the coat off, and the coat goes over them as a blanket. It is a pain in the neck especially when you are doing a lot of in and out of stores in one day, but the alternative isn't worth it.
