Re: Have you done CIO for middle of the night wakings?

Just did it last week for my 10 month old. She was waking sometimes every 2-3 hours...just to nurse. I was a walking zombie working full time with 2 kids to take care of. So I decided to just do it. I hated the thought of it, but I was desperate. She actually doesn't cry going to sleep in the evenings, that was never our issue. So the first night, she woke up at 12:30 and cried only for a few minutes and fell back asleep. Then she woke up at 2:30am and cried for 30 mins and then 4:40 for 45 minutes. It sucked. But I turned off the monitor, closed my door and put on a fan to try to minimize the sound.

We were lucky, it literally only took one night. The next night she woke again at like 4:30, but cried for very little - maybe a few minutes and was back to sleep til 7am. She still does wake sometimes at that 4-5am hour, but its never too long and half the time I don't even hear her - dh does because he is up at that time anyway.

You just have to commit to it and not give in...no matter how long it takes. I know people who had to endure hours of crying. Not sure I would have been able to handle that. So I guess we were lucky. But good luck!!!

I think most people do it due to night waking - that's why I did. DS usually caught on quickly but would regress when he was sickle teething so I had to retrain him every few months. To me, it was totally worth it.

YES! I hit rock bottom when dd2 was 9 mos. old. She'd get up and fall asleep in our arms but always wake up when we put her down. I was nonfunctional. It went on all night long.

On a weekend, I decided to do cio. When she got up, I made coffee, sat on the couch with my iPad, and went into her room in increasing intervals (3 min., 5, 7, 7, 7...) just to reassure her. It took 90 minutes of screaming but she fell asleep. Night 2 was 30 minutes, just one wake up. Night 3 she Sttn. We then did the same thing with the going to bed process. First night it took 20 min.,, next 10, and then 0!

You do need to commit and feel comfortable with this approach.

See I always thought it was for bedtime. I have no idea why it never occurred to me that people do it for motn wakings.

Yes.

CIO is to teach your child to fall asleep on their own. Initially it's for bedtime, but if would work for MOTN, too. The premise is that you teach your child to fall asleep on their own, so when they wake in the middle of the night, they can go back to sleep on their own.

We did it with DD around 6 months old. She's still a great sleeper a year later.

We just did it this past weekend with my 8month old. We did the modified version where you check in after 3 minutes, 5, 7, 10, 10. We actually did it in one night. The first night was hard because he was begging me to pick him up. It took about an hour. Then all the nights since (3 nights) hes put himself back to sleep before it hit 3 minutes. Hes8still waking but I dont have to go in. This morning he even put himself back to sleep until 8am which was late for him and we had to wake him up to go to daycare.
