I think it's ridiculous - even the word Progressive. Isn't progress a good thing? I think it is so I will wear my label of Liberal and Progressive with pride. Imagine if we had always hated progress? No cars, no running water, No smartphone!!!Chat Icon

And The rioting in some states? All in the name of democracy is disgusting. Burning the American flag? When I think of those who lost their lives defending it or gave their youth to defending it ... it makes me angry.

And to this, yes there is some rioting, but most are peaceful protests - which is our right.
And while I do not condone burning the flag - shouldn't we be more concerned about the people and the rights it represents than the actual piece of fabric?
It seems like a lot of the protests are because people don't feel respected - and that their rights aren't being respected (i.e. our president elect has stated he would try to overturn Roe vs Wade. And though now he's backpedaling, during the campaign he said he would do away with marriage equality - and his vice president elect has stated he wants to overturn it - and "fix" gay people by converting them.Chat Icon Chat Icon These among other things.)
The flag is a symbol we should respect - but respecting people and what the flag represents is more important - to me anyway.Chat Icon

Just because you have the right to do something, doesn't always make it the right thing to do.
Peaceful protests to help change something for the Better .. I respect. These protests, I do not. But I do respect those who are doing it peacefully. I didn't mention the peaceful protests because they evoke nothing in me. Rioting? That evokes anger. Flag burning (Everyone has a different feeling when they look at the flag. To some, it's not just a piece of fabric) evokes sadness and anger.

I have zero respect for those who burn the flag. If that makes me some kind of word with the word phobe at the end of it, I'll own it.

I understand and I know many people feel the same. But in the end, it represents something - the people, the rights and the freedoms we have. So if those things aren't being respected, neither is the flag. JMO
And you choose to mention the riots, but that is only a small portion. May I ask why you respect protests but not these? Do you not see why people are concerned about their rights? (that's not meant at all snarky)

The amount of vitriol spewed from both sides is horrendous. I try and read sites that lean in both directions, and the pure hatred being typed is disgusting, from both sides.

I'm going to be honest here and hope I don't regret it

I never saw the word liberal as a bad thing until now. It has now been attached to the constant battle, name calling of anyone who thinks differently then they do (non liberal).

And The rioting in some states? All in the name of democracy is disgusting. Burning the American flag? When I think of those who lost their lives defending it or gave their youth to defending it ... it makes me angry.

All of these things have now , in my mind, changed the way I see the word liberal. It's become a bad word. For me.

But that's like me assuming that ALL Republicans are backwards and ignorant (based on their words and actions) when the reality is, some might very well be, but the majority are not. Same with liberals. You cannot assume, based on the actions or thoughts of a few, that ALL liberals are the same and should now be grouped together. To say "liberal" is now a "bad word" seems a little narrow minded to me. Sorry.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

This way of thinking makes me sad. Liberals, when it comes to social issues, always turn out to be on the right side of history.

It is NEVER right to paint a whole group with the same brush.

You're right. It's never right to do that but I can't help that the word liberal has now changed for me.

Actually, you CAN help it by just not doing it. It's that easy.

I don't respect these protests because they are in response to an outcome people didn't like. Yes, I do understand that people are concerned about their rights but protesting before anything has even occurred - won't change anything because there is nothing to change yet.

If / when the trump admin actually begins the process of changing something that can prove harmful to Americans , THEN i will respect the peaceful protesting. Because you will actually be protesting for a positive change.

I hope that answered your question

People who fought and died for our country were doing it to defend our right to peacefully protest. And, though I would not do it myself, that includes burning the flag. It was actually upheld by the Supreme Court.

Re: Can people stop using liberal like it's a derogatory term?

I think we need to stop using labels as derogatory terms in general.

I am liberal, and I will say that I hear "liberal" and "conservative" used as derogatory terms equally. People often make statements such as "those conservative Christians" and "those entitled liberals." Neither of those terms is useful.

The older I grow, the less useful I find labels in general because they need to such ridiculous generalizations. I don't even really like saying "I am...[insert any label]" because no matter what it is, it comes with an absurd set of generalizations about me.

Thank you. It sort of does.
I have to say though, these aren't just protests based on the outcome people didn't like. I know there is that as well and people are talking about ways that the electoral college could change their votes thereby making Clinton the winner, but besides the fact that I don't believe it could ever happen, to be honest, I'd be so afraid of the backlash - WAY worse than what we have now. As there were many on the right who were talking about violent revolt if Donald didn't win already.
But the reason for protesting when he "hasn't even done anything yet" is to put pressure on the government to make sure he does not do some of the things he has said he would do. Better to stop something before it happens than have to try and change it later. And right now I think many are protesting this Bannon choice because, as it has been said already, he is basically a white nationalist. That is very scary to put someone with those beliefs in that kind of powerful position.
Again, I appreciate you taking the time to answer. I see where you are coming from. Chat Icon

And also the use of Republican or Conservative is considered a dirty word too.

Really? How so? I've always thought the opposition was greater from the right. I think it's also because I've always encountered more conservatives than liberals. In my experience of course.

It depends on how it's said but that can go either way. "Damn democrat" "Damn conservatives / republicans."

It can go either way.

Has anyone been hearing people refer to college as "liberal indoctrination centers". I just read that for the second time since yesterday.

Well, a large amount of professors tend to be liberal and tend to have an effect on students. My Uncle was a Spanish professor and leaned so far right that he used to argue with half the faculty on politics. LOL.

And it's ridiculous because that would mean that anyone who went to college is going to be liberal after 4 years in school. And I know a TON of people with college degrees who are ultra conservative.

I agree. Both my Niece and Nephew went to school. Niece went to Geneseo and Nephew went to Bing. Niece still is conservative. Nephew is Liberal. BTW, both left their homes ultra conservative. I think college had an effect on my Nephew. Which is fine- he is entitled to his beliefs just like everyone is.
