I thought being a liberal was a positive thing, open to change, being progressive.

Today, it's thrown out like a dirty word.

I don't get it. So much of what makes our nation stand apart from underdeveloped and underprivileged ones...well, you can thank a liberal for those ideals.

Dude, if supporting a woman's right to choose or believing that ALL human beings should marry, then I'll wear the badge with pride.

Re: Can people stop using liberal like it's a derogatory term?

I'm going to be honest here and hope I don't regret it

I never saw the word liberal as a bad thing until now. It has now been attached to the constant battle, name calling of anyone who thinks differently then they do (non liberal).

And The rioting in some states? All in the name of democracy is disgusting. Burning the American flag? When I think of those who lost their lives defending it or gave their youth to defending it ... it makes me angry.

All of these things have now , in my mind, changed the way I see the word liberal. It's become a bad word. For me.

But that's like me assuming that ALL Republicans are backwards and ignorant (based on their words and actions) when the reality is, some might very well be, but the majority are not. Same with liberals. You cannot assume, based on the actions or thoughts of a few, that ALL liberals are the same and should now be grouped together. To say "liberal" is now a "bad word" seems a little narrow minded to me. Sorry.

This way of thinking makes me sad. Liberals, when it comes to social issues, always turn out to be on the right side of history.

It is NEVER right to paint a whole group with the same brush.

It's been a "derogatory" term for at least as long as I've been on social media, and before that, even. Ever since people have been able to leave public comments on websites, there have been all sorts of derogatory terms thrown at both sides. There are plenty of people throwing similar terms at Republicans.

I don't like negative labels for either side.

But I'll tell ya, I'm tired of hearing older (mostly white) men say their fathers came over with $20 in their pockets to America and faced lots of discrimination but were so happy to be here. Bootstraps and all that. As if just being victimized by the discrimination they faced was good for them or something.

And now people are just babies if they're crying over swastikas being painted on buildings or harassed. I think it's ridiculous.

Since when Is promoting tolerance bad?

And if all the "crying baby protestors" are too sensitive and need to get over it, don't trump people think the same of melania's plan to fight online social media bullying? Why is that valid? Isn't that silly and people need to get over it?

You do realize the irony in your statements? You just painted Liberals (and therefore Conservatives as well) with the same brush.

Not all liberals are 100% for every social initiative, and not all conservatives are 100% against every social initiative. Not all social initiatives are universally "good" or "bad", either.

Re: Can people stop using liberal like it's a derogatory term?

i feel the total opposite..that if you are a republican or conservative, you are the worse one. that Liberals or to the left were always seen as better. I had many pro hillary liberals on facebook saying that conservatives were uneducated, uninformed, etc.

i work in publishing which is a very liberal industry and people who are conservative, moderately conservative etc. are usually in hiding.

but with this election, everything has gone to sh*t anyway..

Fair enough. I suppose I meant that the liberal way of thinking on social issues is always on the right side of history. We ultimately will move forward, not backward.

We've seen conservatives on here express that they are reluctantly pro choice. So in that respect, they're thinking liberally.

This is my problem with the two party system - that people are forced into categories that require them to make difficult choices.

Edited bc I misspoke and said pro life when I meant pro choice.

And to this, yes there is some rioting, but most are peaceful protests - which is our right.
And while I do not condone burning the flag - shouldn't we be more concerned about the people and the rights it represents than the actual piece of fabric?
It seems like a lot of the protests are because people don't feel respected - and that their rights aren't being respected (i.e. our president elect has stated he would try to overturn Roe vs Wade. And though now he's backpedaling, during the campaign he said he would do away with marriage equality - and his vice president elect has stated he wants to overturn it - and "fix" gay people by converting them.Chat Icon Chat Icon These among other things.)
The flag is a symbol we should respect - but respecting people and what the flag represents is more important - to me anyway.Chat Icon

Really? How so? I've always thought the opposition was greater from the right. I think it's also because I've always encountered more conservatives than liberals. In my experience of course.

Just because you have the right to do something, doesn't always make it the right thing to do.
Peaceful protests to help change something for the Better .. I respect. These protests, I do not. But I do respect those who are doing it peacefully. I didn't mention the peaceful protests because they evoke nothing in me. Rioting? That evokes anger. Flag burning (Everyone has a different feeling when they look at the flag. To some, it's not just a piece of fabric) evokes sadness and anger.

I have zero respect for those who burn the flag. If that makes me some kind of word with the word phobe at the end of it, I'll own it.
