Did anyone go to a trade school instead of college
This is a discussion I had with a coworker yesterday whos son is exploring this option instead of going to college. He just doesn't want the college debt. If you or a family member went to a trade school what trade did you choose and are you happy? What school did you attend?

Did anyone go to a trade school instead of college
Your friend's son should explore the various trade unions- the unions will pay for all of his training- A friend of mine made a huge career change several years ago and left healthcare to become a local 3 electrician--the union paid for all of his class 100% and he had a guaranteed job as an apprentice once he successfully passed all of his classes and exams.

Re: Did anyone go to a trade school instead of college
My DH worked for the MTA as a bus operator for 30 years before he retired. He like driving, never wanted to move up the ladder to road operations by taking the various tests. Union job, good benefits, pension.
I contemplated becoming an electrician or plumber (dad worked construction), but my mother wasn't having any of that.

Re: Did anyone go to a trade school instead of college
My husband is a local 25 electrician. It was a little easier 10 years ago to get into the main division, but it was his best decision. He has no school debt unlike me. And he makes enough to support us fully where I don't have to work if I don't want to. We live out east though. I have 50k in school debt and never got the job that I really wanted. Depending on what's going on in the future when my kids are that age, I will push for them to do things like a trade school etc.

DH is in a trade. Never went to college but is NYS licensed and makes good money. No debt. He recently got a union job that is now paying for him to get his degree as well.
One of my best friends went through a BOCES program and earned her certification/license as a sonogram tech. She makes good money, awesome job flexibility, and once again no debt.
I absolutely plan to encourage my child to explore this option first.

Re: Did anyone go to a trade school instead of college
My brother worked for FedEx when they paid for school (I don't know if they still do) and he could study whatever he wanted, I think. He went to Hendricks Institute and I forget the specifics but know it's IT/computer related. I think he got Microsoft certified and a few others. To be honest it's like a foreign language to me.
Anyway, he works for a large public agency and makes a great salary- there was a time when he was making about what I was making at the NYCDOE at the same time- but I had more education (MA+30) and more experience. So yes, it's definitely a good possibility.

Re: Did anyone go to a trade school instead of college
I did, right after HS I was working in a day care facility and in order to be promoted, I had to complete a certification course with NYS. I enrolled in the program, and received my CDA certification in Infant/Toddler education. At that time, I was making a pretty decent living for someone right out of HS, but that was the farthest I could advance without obtaining a bachelors.
12 years later, I am in working in management in a completely different field making 3x I was in daycare.
I don't regret doing that program whatsoever, because I love working with children and that degree allowed me to have opportunities that I feel someone without any further education wouldn't have received. And I also have no student loan debt.
Depending on what career he wants to go into, technical/trade school can be a great opportunity.

Having a college degree doesn't mean everything as most people know. The persons intelligence, work ethic and personality will take them far too.
Curious if this kid just doesn't want the debt or just isn't interested in college type work? If he WANTS to be in a trade and will get satisfaction from that career than he should look into it. But if he wants to get a college degree I wouldn't let the fear of debt stop him from getting it.
Lots of benefits to trades. One down side I see with non-mgmt level trade jobs is that they are physically demanding jobs. Also If you hurt yourself it can be difficult to go back to work.

If it were my child I would weigh both options. I heard some trade schools cost as much as a state school.

Whatever he chooses, make sure it's not a for-profit school like University of Phoenix, Devry, etc. High cost to go and a lot of time the quality of education is sub-par.

He's done very well in high school and got a nice scholarship to Penn state but he has no idea what he wants to major in and doesn't want to accrue the debt while he's figuring it out.

I didn't but in hindsight, much rather wish I had. Have them check out Mike Rowes Facebook page, he has a foundation that supports trade schools.
