Any experience with Ancestry.com or similar sites?
I am at a loss for ideas for my Dad's birthday and was thinking of getting him a subscription to Ancestry.com but read mixed reviews. They offer a monthly membership (cheapest $19.99) and 6-months (cheapest $99).
Worthwhile? Any other recommended Genealogy sites?

I've used Ancestry on and off for 15+ years. It really does have the largest collection of information, but it is pricey.
There is also FamilySearch.org, which is free and has a lot of info, but not as much as Ancestry.
I would say get him the 6-month subscription and see if it is worth it to him. If it is, then extend it.
My mom sent me some $$ a while back and told to spend it on myself. So I splurged on a year-long subscription to Ancestry. When it is up, I won't renew it for a year. I will just get a monthly when I need to look up something.

Not sure how much it is, but my DH loved 23 And Me. You send in a saliva sample and get a real reading of your ancestry and a ton of personal info. And I believe it included a subscription to one of those ancestry sites because he got a lot of info about distant relatives and stuff.

I thought about 23 and Me bc it sounds like an interesting idea, but then I read how the company is using it as a way for data mining and you have no idea who they release your information to. I dont do anything that would be suspicious, but I also don't want my DNA being in anyone's database.
