Need advice on giving my car to my daughter, should I bother?
I planned on giving my 2010 car to my daughter when she got her license and then getting a new one. But then she is saying she wants to go to out of state college or hours away in NY off Long island. She is in 11th grade and going for road test in April. Is it worth giving her the car for a year? She wanted for senior year and yes would be easier for her to drive herself but then agian I can get her to school if need be. Another issue is the insurance wants about $300-400 ADDITIONAL to add her on the policy, even as a part time driver. so between a new car and that amount, thats alot. and then what happends if she does go out of state? Then I have a additional car here even if taken off the insurance while she in in school. Just curious what you think or would do.Thanks!!

My SS is a senior in HS this year and got his license last May when he was in 11th grade. We got him a used car, even though we knew he would be going away to school this fall. As much as it can be scary thinking about them out there driving, it really has made life much easier. He has a job, so that's a big one - getting himself to and from work. He drives to school every day. And he can go to his friend's houses when he wants and we don't have to worry about bringing him/picking him up. He also will go to visit his aunt who he is very close to, or the mall or what ever. The rule is he always has to tell us where he is going, when he gets there and when he is leaving/heading home. He also has to let us know who will be in the car with him. That rule is starting to lighten up a little now, but he knows what the rules are and that the car can be taken away if he doesn't follow them. We will see how things go and MAYBE (but not likely) he will take the car with him for his 2nd year of college. Otherwise, the car will be there for him when he is home on breaks and during the summer.

In that situation I'd probably be leaning towards no. Between the insurance and cost of a new car it sounds like a big expense that could be put off and it doesn't sound like a car is an absolute necessity for her right now. If she stays local and commutes she'll need a car so I'd probably wait until that decision was made before making such a large purchase. But if you can afford it and it's something you want to do then why not? Just kind of sounds like money out the window to me but I tend to be kind of frugal hahaha.

Keep in mind that if she gets her license, your insurance may require you add her to your policy regardless if she has her own car or not. Check your policy.

Re: Need advice on giving my car to my daughter, should I bother?
I bought my own car in high school. I had it for senior year of college and drove myself to school and work (and out with friends).
I went upstate to college and couldn't have a car freshman year so it stayed home with my parents. Sophomore year, I brought the car to school with me.
If your daughter is responsible, why not give her your car? It will make your life easier. She can also get a job to help cover the costs, if that's an issue.

I just told her she has until April 15th to find a job(ACT and SAT will be done) Im scared to let her out on the road alone lol

I'd get her a car and then *if* she ends up going away to school, just take her off the insurance. Honestly, my parents would've lost their mind if I didn't have a car senior year, I was all over the place and they weren't able to drive me everywhere. I took myself to school every day, I had a job, and at that point..........no specific curfew so they really didn't want to be bothered with driving me around.

Yes I was never legally "given" a car, just drove my dad's old one, but I still was added to the insurance policy once I get my license. On the plus side, as an adult I still use the same company and have decent rates because they count that I have ben a customer since I was 17.
