The Flu Shot- There is still time
There is still time for you to get the flu shot and for it be effective.
Flu season goes until about May. In fact there is a HUGE uptick in flu case the past week all over the country.
The great news is that this years flu shot is VERY effective in keeping away the virus. They said its a GREAT match this year.
I know we have one woman, right now on this board, where her 5 month old is fighting the flu and almost died. At 5 months she is too young for a shot (Vaccination). She relies on those around her to not get her sick.
We get vaccinations for 2 reason. to protect ourselves and to protect others who cant be vaccinated. Like infants who are to young, or those who are ill and cant get the vaccination. Heard immunity does work, and it could save a life.
I URGE anyone who hasn't gotten one yet to speak to their doctor and see if its right for you.

The Flu Shot- There is still time
I've read on facebook mom boards that many moms are being advised by their ped to not get the shot this late in the game because it takes two weeks to become effective and by then flu season is over. I also heard on this board that docs are saying this years flu strain is not a good match. Not sure if it's true or not just what I read on some boards.
Whether you get the shot or not elderry syrup is amazing to add too.

Re: The Flu Shot- There is still time
I totally agree that people should get the flu just but just for the record, I got my flu shot in November and had the flu last week (tested for it.) No matter how effective they say it is, you can still get the flu.

My doctor told me this as well, that he is having a hard time recommending it this year because he has seen so many people he gave the shot to come back in having caught the flu later.
I'm def not trying to discourage anyone from getting it, just wondering why the conflicting info regarding its efficacy this year?

I heard a Dr. on a news program this morning saying that this year's flu shot is a good match for the strain that is most prevalent. And also that there is a late surge of flu cases this year in some states, NY being one of them.

Same here. I was undecided about DS getting it because my friend (who is an ER nurse) said that a lot of people were testing positive for the flu after they got their flu shots.
When I asked DS's ped, she didn't even try to convince me that he needed it. She said this year it hasn't been that effective.

Re: The Flu Shot- There is still time
My kids got theirs back in September, I never get it for myself though. I haven't had the flu since before I got my tonsils out 35 years ago so I don't stress about the flu too much when it comes to me.

Just my $0.02
If you want to take the flu shot, take it. I can't see how taking it will make you worse.
If it is less effective than prior years or less effective than advertised than it's still equal to or more effective than not taking one at all, correct?
I personally never take the flu shot. However, I feel that those who do, do so for their own reasons. Habit, belief, medical necessity, etc.
It's lack of current effectiveness shouldn't be a deterrent. The only thing you have to lose is a bit of pain over the shot and that's it.
I think OP's message is clear. Flu season is around. Take the shot (If you haven't already and generally do), there's still time. Sometimes it just slips people's minds. I think it's a great reminder.
I think for those of us who don't take the flu shot and have no intentions of doing so.... the second part about Lila being ill is a reminder to take good care of ourselves because our health affects others. You may not hold a small child in your arms today but you shake hands with someone who may. Be considerate and stay healthy. Don't spread germs and illness. For EVERYONE's sake.

The Flu Shot- There is still time
Thank you everyone. All I can say is *I* heard this years shot is very effective to the most prevalent strain. Its interesting to hear the difference of opinion.
You can always get the flu. Just a different strain.
But let my message be clear. Its a decision between you and your doctor and you should always talk to a medical professional about this choice.

I heard about the increase in flu and I am terrified. I am allergic to the vaccine and take methotrexate which lowers my ability to fight disease.

Just left my dr for my annual physical. She said they have had a huge number of people test positive for the flu recently and 99% of them DID NOT have the flu shot. She said this year has been a very good match

I wonder why there's such a difference in what doctors are saying. Makes no sense to me.

The Flu Shot- There is still time
I agree it's definitely not too late to get the shot. One year I was just lazy and didn't get it and got a horrible bout of the flu in April.
I have always gotten the shot since then. My OB mentioned that 2 of her patients have the flu right now and as a pregnant woman, that's very scary.

There is still time to get the shot. I was at the doctor earlier this week and she offered me the shot and said there has been an increase in flu cases this month.

My daughter and I have been getting the flu shot since she was old enough to get it so we've been getting the shot for years. My DD is just recovering from the flu. Like others have said, guess there is always still the chance.

Re: The Flu Shot- There is still time
So glad you posted this. I work at a doc office and we are still doing them. My sons all had the flu vaccine and one still got the flu but so what? His brothers didn't, despite constant contact with him. I didn't, despite caring for him. It might provide some protection against a virus that, as little as 100 years ago, was a leading cause of death of Americans.
