Car seat reimbursement after accident

Long story short on Christmas Eve, someone rear ended us when we were stopped at a stoplight. We were 3.5 hours away from home visiting family. Yesterday, we needed to buy a new carseat because we were driving home. With the holiday, all we knew is that insurance would cover a new car seat - no specifics on cost. We went to BRU, bought one that was in stock and called it a day. My DH just got an email saying they'll cover $X for a new carseat. We paid more for the new car seat. Obviously, we didn't have time to shop around and get a great deal. This is our insurance telling us this although in the end we will be going through the other person's insurance as we were not at fault. Does anyone know if they'll give us the amount we paid for the carseat?

TIA.

I'm sure all insurance is different. I would just submit it and see what happens.

When I was tboned and needed 3 new car seats, my insurance company made me take pics of all three seats and had me send links from babies r us showing how much those seats cost. They then told me to get comaprible seats and submit the receipt for reimbursement.

Most policies if you're submitting thru your own insurance, afford coverage for damaged personal property, under collision or comp coverage. It's usually a low amount between $200-500 depending on your own policy language. If you're out of pocket anything related to the accident you can submit the bills to your ins so, and when they subrogate the at fault carrier, they will include your bill.

This.

And even if you have to pay a little OOP, just remember that the outcome is that you still have your little boy safe and unharmed! I personally would rather have the carseat I want than the one that someone's insurance would cover fully.

Re: Car seat reimbursement after accident

I was in an accident a few months ago with my daughter's 4ever in the car. The damages were all covered by the other person's insurance as I was not at fault. He had Geico and they covered the entire cost of a new 4ever. They just told me to buy one that I wanted and submit the receipt for reimbursement. I don't think you should have a problem as long as you submit the receipt.

Thanks everyone! Our insurance was pretty much like you'll submit a bill to her insurance and then they should reimburse you. Fun times.

Re: Car seat reimbursement after accident

I was rear ended right before Thanksgiving. The accident repairs, rental car, etc were all covered by the other persons insurance since he was 100% at fault. I submitted a claim for new car seats and it was denied. The NHTSA says car seats can be reused if the accident meets the following criteria - since my car was rear ended, and the airbags were not deployed...they refused to pay for new seats.

A visual inspection of the child safety seat, including inspection under any easily movable seat padding, does not reveal any cracks or deformation that might have been caused by the crash;

The vehicle in which the child safety seat was installed was capable of being driven from the scene of the crash;

The vehicle door nearest the child safety seat was undamaged;

There were no injuries to any of the vehicle occupants; and

The air bags (if any) did not deploy.

here is a link
NHSTA

definitely submit the bill and see what happens, but be prepared that it might not be covered

Yes this. They go by these guidelines. I was in a pretty minor accident- DD wasn't in the car- but the insurance said the car seat didn't need replacing

Car seat reimbursement after accident

I thought every accident required the seats to be replaced. She hit us going 40 mph while we were at a complete stop. Her airbags deployed and she was hurt, but we weren't. I guess we'll just have to see what happens. We were away from home and i assume since it was a holiday weekend, no one from her side has gotten in touch with us.

For those who were told the NHTSA guidelines - you need to be sure that your car seat manufacturer follows those guidelines as well and ALL OF that criteria MUST be met. Injuries to vehicle occupants includes being sore, achy or in pain as well as visible injury.

OP - you were rear ended. The accident is her fault. You will call her insurance company and file a claim for the seats and gain reimbursement through them.

For anyone in an accident - if the manual states that replacement is necessary for any crash, regardless of occupancy, and you are told otherwise, you can always call the car seat manufacturer and request a letter be sent stating their policy. If still denied by insurance you can ask them to provide you with a letter stating their refusal to comply and that they will be liable for anything that happens if ever involved in a future crash with that specific car seat. That usually works Chat Icon

I was also told by the Geico adjuster who handled my claim that it is actually NYS law now that car seats be replaced after an accident Chat Icon

Britax. And I barely felt the accident.
Like the car barely moved. There was damage to the front bumper that needed fixing but I felt not a thing.
Honestly I feel more on a short stop than I felt in that accident.
I highly doubt the carseat even moved half an inch

No, that's not true (although that would be AWESOME if it was, so let them think that! Chat Icon )

Car seat reimbursement after accident

I was hit by someone who was backing out of a parking space at the same time I was. Both his and my insurance decided he was 75% at fault and I was 25% at fault. I did everything through my insurance and his insurance paid me back 75% of my deductible. I told my insurance company that Graco requires complete replacement of the car seat no matter the severity. They asked me which seat I had, told me to get the same one if possible or at least a comparable one in price. I then had to submit to them a copy of the receipt, a copy of the page of the manual that says it needed replacing, and a picture of the old car seat with the straps cut. They then cut me a check for the cost of the seat.

Not all insurance companies will pay for a replacement but I was prepared to fight them if necessary!

Car seat reimbursement after accident

We have Liberty Mutual. My husband hit a deer going 70mph. No injuries and he was alone but the car was deemed totaled since the front passenger side was blown out and it took out the radiator. I called it in and told them we had 2 Graco MyRide 65's in it. They went on amazon and gave us the price from there. It was easy peasy no issues at all. No pictures no nothing.
