Holidays in the city
We haven't gone into the city for the holidays yet - is it better to go during the day (in the morning before crowds get going) or is it worth fighting the crowds at night when lights are on? We can only go during the weekends or during winter break (when everyone else is available, of course).
I know about Macy's, Rockefeller Center, Bryant Park, Radio City, and the train show at the Botanical Gardens. Anything else you'd recommend?

Re: Holidays in the city
We were in the city this past weekend. We did the Central Park Zoo, not holiday related but my girls love it there.
We then went to Rockefellar plaza in the afternoon. My DH and I were there last year on a Saturday night and you could not move. So we went in the afternoon, not as pretty but my girls were still impressed. You coudn't even walk down 5th, and this was at 3pm. We ended up walking down 6th to avoid the crowds looking at the store windows.
We went to Bryant Park that evening after dinner. I loved it. Shops were great, loved the hot chocolate and macaroons being sold and the kids can play right under the tree. They really enjoyed it. It was crowded but not nearly as bad as Rockefellar at night.
Have a great time!

If you're in Bryant Park, make sure you stop by the Wafels & Dinges kiosk for a waffle! They're sooooooo good!

I agree! My company just hosted a "Festivus" event and used them. They came to our office and served them out for about 2 hours. It was my first time trying them, delicious!

Re: Holidays in the city
I was in the city this past Sunday night and went to see the tree in Rock Center. 5th Avenue was total mayhem, however, once you got in front of the tree and started walking towards it the crowds thinned considerably.
They have a new traffic pattern this year (at least I think new this year) in that you have to start on 5th if you want to go around the front of tree and around the ice rink. You can still go around the back from 48th or 50th street, but you won't be able to circle around the front on the concourse from there.
We're planning to take the kids in this Sunday and are hoping to get to the tree by 6am. This way it's still dark and we can see the lights on. Perhaps that's an option?

Holidays in the city
We go in every year and every year we always go in at 5:30 AM
It is the BEST time to go. The tree is lit, the streets are empty, we literally park on 51st Street and cross 5th ave. We have the best view of the store windows because no one is there rushing you along. Then we head to Macy's and get online to see Santa - they start at 8:00 am the week before Christmas. We are home by 930 am.

That's actually a great idea.
It's been so warm on the weekends too - I think it's busier than usual. We went last weekend and it was very crowded at Macy's around 10:30 - the line for Santa was 3 hrs long (we weren't planning to get a picture, just hoping to look at him and the display like they used to let you do) and it was chaotic around the windows (they used to have a queue set up so there was some order but, it seems this year they dont').
