New York City Out Of Running For 2012 Olympic Games
SINGAPORE -- New York has been eliminated in the second round of voting for the 2012 Olympics.
New York, Moscow and Madrid were eliminated early in the voting Wednesday, leaving three cities in the race.
Before the final vote, the five cities bidding for the 2012 Olympics made their final pitches with messages of support from presidents, prime ministers and sports celebrities. The Big Apple had Mohammad Ali in its corner.
Moscow dropped out after receiving the fewest votes in the secret ballot of the International Olympic Committee. New York followed within a few minutes.
Still in contention were Paris and London. Though International Olympic Committee voters went on to pick the host city, the winner was not immediately announced.
The IOC began voting at 6 a.m. It is believed to be the most glamorous and most hotly contested battle to win the distinction of hosting the summer games in history of the Olympiad.
Just hours before the final vote, the five cities bidding for the 2012 Olympics made their final pitches with messages of support from presidents, prime ministers and sports celebrities. The Big Apple had Muhammad Ali, the greatest in its corner.
Paris, New York, Moscow, London and Madrid gave 45-minute presentations to Olympic Committee.
Paris went in as the perceived favorite and London a strong challenger. New York and Madrid would be surprise winners, while Moscow was a long shot.

Poor Paris, this is the sixth time they put in a bid and lost...I wonder if they will ever give up.

I wasnt looking forward to the Olympics in NYC!!
Neither was I! It's hard enough to walk down the street in the City with the all the tourists as it is, I can't imagine how much worse it would get. Paris had the winter olympics a few years ago so I'm glad London got it.

I cannot tell you just how THRILLED I am that NY didn't get it 
I am also thrilled that London DID get it... I love London and the pepole there really seemed to WANT it (well so did Paris, but I'm still glad London got it )

Same here. When I was there in April EVERYONE was talking about how badly they wanted the bid. The whole city was decorated, everyone had bumper stickers and was wearing pins... I felt the whole city was behind it. I'm very sad for the French.
