Re: how many years is everyone holding on to things such as..
Bank statements : 0 because i switched to electronic statements so they just go straight into a desktop folder on my laptop. The bank can always email me a statement if i domt have one going back to january 2013 and anything older, I doubt I would need it for anything.
Deposit and ATM receipts: None as its all electronic smd hate keeping that anywhere as it usually gets lost anyway.
Boxes from Amazon, Gilt, RueLala, Macys, Hautelook, Macys, etc: unless I plan to return or exchange the item within a week, they go into a garbage can in our backyard and gets tossed when next garbage pick up comes by.
The only receipts I keep is ones from large items like TVs, vacuums, washer/dryer or major appliances, major IKEA items since sometimes they can break the first 6 months so if they do, I have the receipt to either return, exchange or sell it on CL or eBay for anyone who needs parts.
DH on the other hand,,,borders on hoardlike behavior..

All banking and pay information keep for 7 years then shred. Atm receipts I shred right away at the end of the month purchases like cars and such keep as long as we have the car. Boxes for purchases i toss once I use the item. I'm pretty frugal and only buy what I really need. Rarely do I buy on impulse.

Re: how many years is everyone holding on to things such as..
Receipts for things like a new refrigerator is kept along with the owners manual for the life of the appliance. I have a banded folder that I keep all owners manuals and receipts for appliances.
Taxes and health care receipts I keep for eight years.I put them in a large zip lock bag labeled by year. After taxes are done, I put them in the under bed Tupperware. Once eight years are up I shread the oldest receipts to make room for the new receipts.
Regular receipts I cross check the credit card statement and at the end of the month I throw them out. If I purchase something I am unsure I am keeping, I may keep the receipt in my pocketbook for two months, but by then I will have either returned it or decided to keep it. If I make a return, I keep the receipt until I can check that it's been properly credited.
Most boxes get chucked unless it is a seasonal item that will be put back in the box for next year.
I have a problem with magazines and have a huge stack of them next to my bed.

I never save anything. Everything is electronic these days. I only save receipts if I'm unsure I will keep the item. If I'm keeping it, the receipt gets tossed. I never save boxes either.

I save almost nothing. We save receipts from items we know we will need for taxes and DH saves out TV boxes (I have no idea why lol). If there is some sort of receipt or piece of paper I think I might want to hold on to, I scan it and save it digitally. The paper goes in the trash. That's about it.

I don't keep any of that. When a bill comes in the mail, payment is scheduled, and the bill is tossed. I don't get bank statements, and select no to atm receipts.
The only things I keep are tax returns, and large item receipts staples to the owners manual (washer, dryer, etc).

This. I hate clutter, although you child to tell by looking at my kitchen table lately , so unless I am unsure about keeping it I throw away reciepts. I do keep appliance manuals and reciepts for big purchases like TVs or Washer/dryer in a folder in our filing cabinet though. Boxes get tossed immediately.

Ditto. And I never get an ATM receipt or gas receipt etc. I choose no when they ask if you want a receipt. I toss EVERYTHING. My house is cluttered and small enough. I cannot imagine keeping a box from a hair dryer etc. .my husband would kill me!!!

All of my bills and bank statements are electronic so I have no paper statements. I save bank deposit slips until the deposit is posted in my account. I only save receipts for big ticket purchases like appliances or electronics for a year or so. I do not keep the boxes things come in--I save our tax returns. I am big in throwing out any unnecessary papers.

Re: how many years is everyone holding on to things such as..
I throw out boxes right away , I shred bank statements right after I balance my checking account, and I never hold onto withdrawal/deposit slips. I HATE holding onto to ANY paper, the faster I can get rid of it the better. I went paperless with ALL of my credit card accounts, mortgage, etc. There is no reason to hold onto these things anymore, you can access them online anytime. We even switched DH's pay stubs over to paperless. The only thing I hold onto for a few years is our income tax returns.
ETA - I only keep receipts for big ticker items like furniture, appliances, etc.

Banking stuff I never keep. Like PP said, everything is electronic nowadays, so there really is no need. I keep receipts for big things we buy for 30 days. and boxes for the same amount of time, in case I want to return something.

Make sure you are shredding all those bank statements or anything with account numbers on them.

Re: how many years is everyone holding on to things such as..
I hold onto nothing. I get electronic bills and statements.
It is actually easier, I had to provide all of these things for my divorce and all I had to do was click away and I had them.
If there is an apocalypse and there are no computers I'm not going to worry about my bank statements
