The Dreaded 18 mos Sleep Regression- HELP!

DD is almost 18 months old, and has been a perfect sleeper till now. She used to go right in her crib after our nighttime routine around 8pm witout a fuss and fall asleep on her own and wake up around 7/7:30. Starting a couple of weeks ago she was getting up at around 5 am-6am crying like a lunatic and up for the rest of the day. I knew this was the start of something! Now the last few days, she wont go to sleep in her crib on her own.. so we have been holding/rocking her till she falls asleep and then putting her down in her crib. Luckily it doesn't take her forever to fall asleep (my older one would take forever) but still I don't want to get in this habit indefinitely. Anyone been through this and have any strategies for getting her to fall asleep on her own again??

We had the same thing. We tried CIO and it didn't work since he would get out of his bed and cry by the door and not go back into his bed. We say for a while and then when we moved his rooms (we were using his old room as the nursery for the new baby) we said you are a big boy and we don't have to sit. We started by giving him a choice of having his door open or closed and we rub his back for a few minutes and then say good night. It worked but we did sit for about a month or so.

I havent had to deal with CIO yet in a bed (just crib, and it worked very fast/well). I think once they are in a bed the super nanny route would be my first go-to. She puts the child back in bed and explains to them why 1x. After that she just keeps putting the child back into their bed without eye contact or speaking. Over and over, AND OVER. Probably a horrible 2 nights, but after that it seems to work.

DD is just over 17 months old and still in her crib. How did you do CIO and how long did it take to work?

The Dreaded 18 mos Sleep Regression- HELP!

We are at the tail end of this now. It was a rough few weeks. I knew she was getting a tooth and sure enough, she cut a canine.

We just sat with her til she finally fell asleep and again in the middle of the night when she would wake up. If it was after 4am, we just brought her in bed with us. Once the regression ends, everything goes back to normal.

We did CIO when DS was 7 mo's old. We tried the Ferber method where you go in and try to soothe them every few minutes. My DS did not respond well to that -- made him more of a wreck. So, i just let him cry, telling myself id wait 15-20 mins before i went in. It was the most excruciating time of my life but after a little over 15 mins he fell asleep. The second night only took 7 mins, and then after that he didnt cry anymore and was able to soothe himself. I have a monitor with a screen so I could see that he was OK. I dont know if i could have done it without one.
Honestly, in those moment it was the hardest thing I had ever done in my life. I know that sounds dramatic but it really felt that way. BUT i am so glad I did it and he figured out how to soothe himself. I'd do it again.
Now that he is older he has at times tried to "play" me or DH. He will call us from the crib, crying our names, etc etc. I find that when ive responded to it, the minute i walk in he stops. So it is all an act. And he knew from me coming back that all he had to do was tantrum and Id be there. So after that I just stopped going back in. There were 2-3 nights where he called for us and screamed... and when we stopped going in he realized we werent going to respond to that.... he stopped.
I also let him have a toy in the crib when i put him down. It is usually a light up toy, and has music. I switch the toy out every couple of days to keep it interesting and fun. Usually that distracts him long enough and then he just falls out.
