please help me figure this out - sleep related @ 6 mos
so DD will be 6 months next week and is usually a pretty good sleeper. Sleeps 11-12 hours at night and 3 naps a day.
For the past week or so she has been:
1. fighting her 3rd nap (around 4pm or so). It will take her a good 15 minutes to go down. It lasts 30 minutes. 2. She is also wide awake at bedtime whereas in the past she would pass right out while nursing. Her bedtime used to be around 7ish, she is now falling asleep around 8. Instead of nursing her 20 minutes, I am nursing about an hour! I let her even though she is able to sleep on her own. Shes just not sleepy at her normal time anymore.
3. She has woken up every morning at exactly 5:30AM. she usually wakes at 6:30. i dont go to get her and she will nap on and off till 6:30-7:00 when i do go to get her.
Do you think she could be transitioning from 3 naps to 2? Or is she too young for that to happen?
Ped also said she is getting her teeth in. In her words "she will have a tooth for christmas" even though i dont really see anything right now. Could teething really cause these problems?
Anyone have any thoughts on this? I know shes working out something but i dont know how to help her. Thanks in advance.

1. At 6m ds had only 2 naps.
2. my guess she's nursing for comfort, maybe teething, maybe separation anxiety
3. DS did this too, woke up at 6:30 and went in and out of state of sleep till 7:30, and sometimes still does. He knows I wont come in till that time, he knows to keep himself occupied.
as for teeth... my ped almost said word for word what your did when ds was 3m, ds didn't break a tooth till 6.5m. Some babies are really slow teethers, some aren't. DS suffered all those months as if the tooth was about to break
I would try to see what happens if you put her down drowsy but awake. Does she nurse to sleep for naps too? Maybe its time to break that habit? Babies need to learn to self soothe, this age is the easiest to teach them. You can do it a million different ways, everything from sitting in the room, patting them on the back to CIO.

Thanks for responding. Sorry i didnt mention that she does self soothe and sleeps on her own for both naps and nighttime. But at night, she is often passed out before I can even put her down drowsy and i usually just put her in the crib and shes good for the night. lately, she has just been wide awake, trying to look around in the dark, looking up at me and smiling. she will go back on and keep nursing. she is totally not eating, just pacifying herself to sleep. i realize this but just let her. A few times I had to take her off bc it was taking way too long and put her in the crib. it took a while but she eventually went to sleep. but the bottom line is, shes not tired or sleepy at this bedtime anymore.
I'm thinking she may be trying to drop a nap...how did your DC get to 2 naps a day? thanks again.

I basically entertained him into being awake. If he got really cranky or showed obvious tired cues I put him down, otherwise I made it the most exciting time of the day. We also have a pretty rigid routine, I think he came to expect that time of day to be fun. Now some of that time is our dinner time.

I think it's probably teething and also the fact that she doesn't need the third nap. My son is 6 months old and takes 2 naps a day. He passes out at bedtime. He wakes from his last nap around 3:30ish and then goes to sleep around 7:30ish.

thanks, the more i read these and think about it, you're probably right. 2 naps...and she should be staying up longer between nap and bedtime. we will work towards that. thanks so much.
