Does anyone who works in NYC drive and use a garage as opposed to LIRR?
I'm wondering what the rate of a garage would be in the financial district. Are there garages that offer cheaper rates if you want to park monthly but not overnight?

It's damn expensive. My boss parks and it is like $350 a month and then you have drive, pay tolls, gas, deal with lunatics.

I don't know anyone. It would cost more to drive (Parking, tolls, gas, wear and tear). Plus you would have to leave your house at 5am every day.

My husband does it - but he leaves around 545 every morning to beat some of the traffic. It has its pros and cons. You can negotiate with the garages on a monthly rate as well.

What area does he drive in from?

Where are you coming from?
ETA - I think the lots down here are around $30-40/day. I'm not sure what monthly is. There is a garage under my building, I can try to see what they advertise as monthly when I go out later.

I often drive to Queens and take the express bus from there. Parking is VERY expensive in the city.

Re: Does anyone who works in NYC drive and use a garage as opposed to LIRR?
When I worked in midtown, I used to drive in on office days (we could stroll in around 9:30-10am). I parked at an ICON garage and the rate would be $22-30/day f you parked after 8 or 9 am. Eventually I transitioned to a monthly rate which was around $250/month.
Check the Icon parking garage web site, they have locations all over the city and they also offer coupons. I found it by chance when they were handing out flyers with the coupons on street corners near Grand Central. I find Icon is the cheapest while Central Parking was the most expensive.
As far as traffic, there were a ton of side streets I would use to beat it. The LIE before Queens Center Mall exit is a nightmare, so I would take Merrick Road to Sunrise Highway, all the way to the Belt Pkway (service road), get off at either Woodhaven Blvd North to LIE or at North Conduit and cut across Ridgewood/Glendale/Maspeth and get onto the LIE service road to the bridge or tunnel.
