Those who drive from LI to NYC daily...
Can you tell me what the commute is like? DH and I are house hunting on the South Shore of Western Nassau - Hewlett/Woodmere/Lynbrook area. I work at a school in the city, I normally get into work between 7:45-8am and am done at 4pm. We currently live in Queens and I take the subway. My first thoughts have obviously been to take the train when we move, and that is still an option, but the monthly LIRR plus metrocard is expensive, so I'm wondering if, because I go in early and leave a bit earlier than typical hours, driving and getting a monthly spot would make more sense. Does anyone drive around that time and can speak to traffic etc. and how long it usually takes? I'll probably end up on the LIRR but I figured it's worth looking into all options.
Thanks!

Re: Those who drive from LI to NYC daily...
I work in Brooklyn but I live further out (in Melville). I leave my house by 5:30am and am in my office at 6:30am. Some mornings, there is already traffic at that time. If I leave even 10 minutes later, traffic is already building up. I leave Brooklyn at 3 and traffic is already bad some days. When it rains, it is worse. If you leave at 4, I think traffic would be horrible!

Re: Those who drive from LI to NYC daily...
I drive from Hicksville to Canarsie (Brooklyn) everyday. I'm also a teacher and my hours are roughly the same as yours.
I don't do too bad going in. I get there in a little less than an hour. Coming home is rough, though. It can take 1.5-2 hours.
Those hours aren't early enough to escape the traffic. It's rush hour by that time. In fact, if I have a faculty meeting or stay later to prep I think I do better leaving at 5ish than if I leave at 3:45.
You said "the city" so I'm assuming you mean Manhattan.
I would take the LIRR.

Oops, sorry, yes to clarify I meant Manhattan.
Thanks so much! I'm definitely leaning towards LIRR.

Did you price out parking your car everyday (assuming there is no parking at the school)? It could be more than LIRR/Metro card. Just a thought.

plus tolls and the wear & tear on your car. My mother used to drive from Bayside to Manhattan and her car kind of took a beating. It felt a little run down after city driving for 2 years.

Re: Those who drive from LI to NYC daily...
You will be using LOTS of gas filling up atleast once a week plus tolls, plus parking daily in a garage (Approx $20-30 a day). You might be better off just taking the LIRR and Subway.

My DH thought about switching to driving a couple years ago-- then he factored in the costs of gas, parking, wear and tear, etc. At the end the savings is minimal and taking the LIRR is probably better for your mental health. Yes it's full of inconsiderate idiots, but at least you can read, play games on your phone, etc, instead of sitting in bumper to bumper traffic.

Thanks for the insight! I think my original idea of taking the LIRR has been confirmed
