Hair loss post Partum

How normal is this? How long does it last and how much is normal?
I remember this happening when my DD was born but this time I feel like it is so much more.
My DS is 4 months old.

Hair loss post Partum

Very normal. I went for a haircut 12 months post partum and she commented on it and said it was either your hair growing back after the baby or you're very flatiron happy. My hair is growing back and I have all this short hair growing in.

Totally normal.

From the American Pregnancy Association:

The most common period of hair loss occurs approximately three months after delivery. The rise in hormones during pregnancy keeps you from losing your hair. After delivery, the hormones return to normal levels, which allows the hair to fall out and return to the normal cycle. The normal hair loss that was delayed during pregnancy may fall out all at once.

Up to 60% of your hair that is in the growth state may enter into the telogen resting state. The hair loss usually peaks 3-4 months after delivery as your hair follicles rejuvenate themselves. As noted before, this hair loss is temporary and hair loss returns to normal within six to twelve months.

Normal. The worst is when it grows back and you get all those wisps everywhere. But I lost clumps down the drain for months and months after.

Re: Hair loss post Partum

My Dr explained it to me like this:

Pregnancy hormones cause you to hold on to more hair- your shedding cycle slows down. That is why many women notice they have thicker, fuller hair while pregnant (it's not the prenatals, it's the slowing down of the shed cycle)
Once your hormones start to regulate after giving birth, you shed that hair you held on to.
You aren't losing hair, you are just getting rid of what you normally would have shed at a slower pace.
So it looks like a LOT coming out- but you aren't going bald!

Re: Hair loss post Partum

My hair began shedding it seemed like was in the delivery room. It increased over time. I've been on hairfinity for a month and a half now but have to stop since I'm about to do fertility treatments again. My hair was a little past my shoulder but is now 2 inches longer.

My son will be 4 months next week and I was just saying yesterday to my husband that I could donate hair with all the hair I am losing. It's coming out in huge clumps.

I was going to say.. I have crazy thick hair and have always lost a lot .. until I got pregnant then I stopped losing it. Now 3 months ppd I feel like I'm making up for it!! Guess I'm not crazy for thinking that way.. it's true!!

DD is almost 9 months, but I'd say for me the hair loss started to wane around 8 months PP.

From 4 months to 8 months, it looked like I was removing a rat from my drain when I showered. Chat Icon

My hair loss started around 4 months and went til about 7/8 months. Now at 11 months PP I have these crazy short pieces in the front of my head. Chat Icon

If you have dark hair you may want to get highlights to lighten it up so your hair will look fuller. That's what I did and it made a world of difference.
