Newborn Poop Help!

DD is 19 days old. She won't BF so I'm pumping and supplementing with formula. She's gone from about 2-44oz of BM/day to about 8oz of BM, the rest formula. She hasn't pooped since Sunday. She's farting up a storm but otherwise doesn't seem to be in discomfort. I was reading that BF'ed babies don't poop as often as FF'ed babies. Could it be that since she's getting more BM, that she's pooping less or is it more likely that she's constipated?

She's eating and peeing normally.

IMO it can certainly be that - my DD didn't poop for days at a time when she was on 100% breastmilk.

My pediatrician always said it's good that the baby is passing gas. As long as the baby isn't uncomfortable and everything seems "normal" it's okay.

Re: Newborn Poop Help!

I never BF'd my baby but I just wanted to comment that we saw a difference in our DS's poop patten at around 3 weeks old as well and we we're paranoid that he was constipated but it turns out he was fine and ending up going normally after a few days. I think they are just constantly changing so if she's not in any visible discomfort I would just proceed as normal and she'll go when she's ready. if you start getting worried, I'm sure a call to the ped would give you peace of mind.

I agree thats its normally - especially if she's not uncomfortable. You could try rubbing her belly in a circle around her belly button, and if you feel you need too, use a rectal thermometer loaded with vaseline to stimulate her. Also bicycle legs

I called my pediatrician about this. They said unless he is in discomfort it is fine. The Vaseline thermometer trickif you can see she is straining or in discomfort
