fyi i have a similar countertop and was torn. i am so glad i went with what i did...hang on ill try and upload a pic

And if that is a pic of your current countertop, did you ever think about removing that lip on the wall? It shouldn't be that difficult, i've seen tons of people do it themselves on blogs.
We got granite installed and did not have them put that extra piece on the wall so our backsplash goes straight down to the counter, I like the look of it. Hope that makes sense, here's a pic of ours to show you what I mean...

I totally agree! I hate that lip, but there isn't a "seam" at the inside of the angle. I hope I am explaining that correctly... It's one continuous piece of formica. Do you have any blogs that you know off the top of your head that show how they did this?

OUt of the 2, I prefer the second because the first one (although lovely) looks a bit busy with the granite.

if you decide to keep looking... i don't know if you like the look of those crackled glass tiles? i'm not sure if you know what i'm talking about, but they come in a variety of colors and shapes. i just picked out a very "busy" granite and went with the crackled glass tiles for backsplash in a very neutral tone, subway tile type layout - so it doesn't take away from the granite but adds some oomph too

I agree with #2. If you had a solid color counter like quartz I would do #1 (this is what we did and we have something similar to #1 except it is in the brown/natural stone family).
