Which backsplash do you like better?

Dh's friend is going to put in a backsplash for us.

I hate our formica countertop, but we are not going to change that right now, because it will start the spiral of new projects (new sink, faucet, etc) that we just don't want to take on right now.

So, which one would you go with,
#1 - long thin rectangular tiles
#2 - neutral color granite subway tiles
or keep looking?

I am open to suggestions! Thank you!

OUt of the 2, I prefer the second because the first one (although lovely) looks a bit busy with the granite.

know what else I love? the natural stone look as a backsplash.

with that counter, I like #2. I think #1 is too busy.

If you had a solid counter, I would go #1

Definately #2 but I partial to bigger tile backsplashes.

Is it weird that I think the natural stone one looks crooked?

i just did mine in the little rectangles and it looks AMAZING!!!!!

What if you did a combo of the 2, I did square tiles with a section of the long ones going the length of the counters.

I voted other. I would do #1 with #2 mixed in , maybe about four or five rows of number 2 toward the bottom of number 1 to give it some interest.

I think #2 just by itself will be too busy and #1 by itself is kind of boring....have you considered #1 in smaller tiles as well?

I voted other...I like the long rectangular tiles but I think a neutral palate would look nice. The green is throwing me.

fyi i have a similar countertop and was torn. i am so glad i went with what i did...hang on ill try and upload a pic

I definitely would go with the second one. I have to agree with the other girls and say that the first one is a little too busy.

Subway tiles. I think mosaics and such are a fad right now. Subway tiles are classic.

Number 2. I like both styles, but the classic subway tile looks better with the busy counter.

I like #2 better, #1 is too much and takes away from the granite. I have something similar in my kitchen.

I'd love glass subway tiles in there! I think its a compromise of what you have in both pics...the first mosaic is glass and then the second one is a plain granite subway tile right?

They're plain and a little less "busy" looking...here is a pic for your ref

And if that is a pic of your current countertop, did you ever think about removing that lip on the wall? It shouldn't be that difficult, i've seen tons of people do it themselves on blogs.

We got granite installed and did not have them put that extra piece on the wall so our backsplash goes straight down to the counter, I like the look of it. Hope that makes sense, here's a pic of ours to show you what I mean...

I voted for the granite subway tiles, although I have to admit that I LOVE glass subway tiles way more!

I have a thing for glass subway titles!
