Flu and flu shots
Seeing so many posts about kids with the flu this year If your child got the flu, did they get the flu shot? Just wondering if the shots our kids got are effective this year. Everyone saying this is going to be a bad year for the flu..seeing activity super early all over the country.

Re: Flu and flu shots
All the people we know who got the flu did not get the shot. They were told they had a strain covered by the shot (strain A I think they said). The people I know who got the shot have not had the flu. My ped said the strains going around so far (still a while for this season to change) have been covered in the shot.

Re: Flu and flu shots
I'm curious about this too but I know they said this year's flu shot is supposed to be pretty good as far as covering the right strain. I have heard a couple people say they or their child did get the shot and still got the flu but I don't know if this is the norm. I know there have been many positive cases of the flu already this year and we still have a long season ahead of us.

Re: Flu and flu shots
The flu shot can never 100% protect you from getting the flu.
Every year, the flu shot is made based on the strains that they feel will be most common. There are so many strains of the flu, so even if you get the flu shot it is possible for you to still get a strain of it that was not in the shot.
My kids are 5 and 3 and have gotten the flu shot every year since they are able to. I have been getting the flu shot myself ever since I had my DS and even got the swine flu vaccine when I was pregnant with my DD. IMO, better to protect yourself, even a little, from something that can potentially be debilitating than not protect yourself at all. The flu can be absolutely horrible.
I have also read that this year they are saying the shot is made of strains that they are seeing the most in people who are getting sick, so it's an especially good year to get the shot. Also remember, you aren't protected from the strains in the shot until about 2 weeks after you get it. Your body needs to take time to build up the antibodies.
I know there are plenty of people out there who are against the flu shot, this is just my opinion.

DS is 7 months, currently has the flu and he DID get the flu vaccine. It was one of the vaccines the dr made sure he got on time!

Flu and flu shots
Just a reminder the flu shot does not PREVENT you from getting the flu.. EVER it only minimizes the severity. You could feel nothing or just a cold but you can still GET the flu its just not as bad.

Re: Flu and flu shots
Remember getting the shot does not mean you won't get the flu just it protects from the strains in the shot. There are strains not in the shot so you can get one of those strains which is how you can have the flu and have gotten the shot. Also it takes 2-3 weeks to get immunity so you can get the shot then catch the flu a week or two later. That is why they say to get the shot in Aug-Oct before the season starts so you can get the immunity before it starts going around.
