I really need advice on MMR, chicken pox & flu shots (relates to DD's hospital procedure coming up)-- LONG

I have tried to figure out what to do and I just can't. DD's 15 month well-visit has been scheduled for like 2 months (I do it in advance so I get my fav docs)...date is Oct. 3. Then, we just had to schedule her hospital procedure (numerous posts on this-- it's a catherization to look at her kidneys/bladder, she's going under anesthesia Chat Icon ), and that's on Oct. 2nd.

Now-- at the 15 month well-visit she's SUPPOSED to get the MMR and the chicken pox. From day 1, I've never planned on getting them at the same appt-- wanted to do one, then wait maybe 2-3 weeks and get the other. But now the flu shot is playing into it too (they're available already, right? Chat Icon ) She's definitely getting the flu shot this year, and I definitely want her to get the other 2 as well.

My question-- when the heck should she get them? I don't want her getting any the day after her procedure, obviously. So should I wait until 2 weeks after the procedure (just a good sounding #, no exact reason why I picked that) and do her well-visit then, and have 1 shot given? If so, which one? The MMR, or the chicken pox? Or the flu shot? And then how long after that first one should I go back for the second one? I just don't want to overwhelm her body.

Ugh, this is overwhelming & confusing. Not to be selfish, but at that point we'll be getting towards Thanksgiving, I certainly don't want her to be sick from a reaction to the shots, since we go OOT for Thanksgiving.

Help, please! Chat Icon

ETA: What's the "sick time" for the MMR and the chicken pox shot? Possible side effects, incubation?

I would do the MMR then flu then pox all a month spaced out. The MMR could cause a rash/fever about 2-7 days out. We dont do flu shots but i think it is a dead virus so there should be no side effects. The pox Emma got a few spots 2 weeks after her shot but that was it.

She will be great in surgeryChat Icon

Thank you! Would you wait a month after her procedure then to do the MMR, or 2 weeks? It's not a "surgery", just a testing...she should be fine later that same day the doc says.

I know the doc says she will be fine but I like waiting and knowing they have no after effects from anesthesia and they are 100% back to themselves. I would probably wait a few days atleast. I don't like pumping little bodies full of stuff all at once.

Edited cause I can't spell or come up with a complete thought today. LOL

Yeah, me either...I'm on the cautious side too. I'm thinking of waiting at least 2 weeks after the procedure to do the first. Thanks Chat Icon

DS had the MMR & Chicken pox at the same time at 15 months. I would wait I guess a week or so then do it so you know they are good and then I would do the Flue at the beginning of Nov. so even if she gets sick from it you should be in the clear for Thanksgiving.

The only thing I can tell you (and I didn't read all the posts on this thread - just yours) is that the first time and infant gets a flu shot, they need a series of TWO - one month apart. Keep that in mind when trying to figure out the others.

You're right, thank you! She did get it last year, she's getting it for the 2nd year this year. Is that a 2-part too? I haven't asked about it yet.

Honestly I would wait. When G was suppossed to have a procedure, the Dr let us know to schedule it around being medicated or immunzed.

I was told that a reaction from MMR can occur anywhere UP TO 15 days.

I think I would wait to give her all shots after the procedure. One less thing to worry about at the time.

Maybe do the MMR on 10/15 and then chicken pox and the flu in early Nov? Not sure if they can do those two at the same time or not.

Not sure if this helps, but this is what I did. The MMR at 15 months, then waited a month and gave chicken pox and flu together. I wasn't planning on the flu, but they happened to have it and I didn't want to come back or wait for 18 month visit.

If she got it last year, then this year is only one shot.

I would wait till after the procedure for the MMR and FLu shot. The chicken pox they say has no reactions....

The MMR I would be too nervous and want to have done no where NEAR anything.

Just a note - my ped told me there was a good chance DD would have a reaction to the Chicken pox shot - fever maybe some spots - so a child can have a reaction to the Chicken pox shot. I was told the reaction could be 2-3 weeks after the shot. DD has only had a reaction to the MMR (told could get a reaction 7-15 days after the shot) - she may have had a reaction to the chicken pox shot -but there is some question whether it was the shot or a minor virus.

I would split the three shots - do MMR one visit, Chicken pox another (if not given with MMR they have to be given a minimum of 1 month apart), and the flu shot on another visit - maybe do the flu shot first - so she will have it for the winter - maybe -1-2 weeks after the procedure and then come back maybe in Nov and december for the other two.

I would wait to do any vaccination until after the procedure. Isn't it soon?

I would split the MMR and do the Chicken Pox last.

Yes, I agree, I am definitely NOT doing anything before her procedure. It's what to do AFTER and how long after that I'm wondering about. Chat Icon

I would play it by ear. I would see how well she does, making sure there is no fever, she is completely herself.

My ped told me that I have to make sure DS is well for 2 weeks prior to any vaccination.
