Cold cuts
I've had a few turkey melt sandwiches and a hot roast beef sandwich. I wasn't a HUGE cold cut fan to begin with so I don't always seek it out but on occasion if we're going to a deli I know and like I'll get a turkey melt sandwich.

Cold cuts
Its not really about moderation with something that could possibly be contaminated with listeria... You could eat it every day and be fine or you could have it once and have a problem. If you trust the place the food is from then get it... heat it up if you feel the need to.

Re: Cold cuts
I eat cold cuts throughout my pregnancy!!
It is FINE as long as you are buying from a reputable place with good turnover!!
It doesn't make sense to me when i hear people say "i will allow myself once a week to have cold cuts". If you're getting it from a good place it is safe. Listeria is found in many things, just use your judgment.

I specifically asked my dr about the turkey melts and she said these are fine because they are cooked and heated. I have not had one yet, I am being a nervous nelly in the first trimester. But i will definitely be getting my turkey melt after my 12 week appt!

Re: Cold cuts
this is my honest question though....
if let's say package of boars head turkey was contaminated with listera, wouldn't it have been contaminated in "production" so to say, and not in fact in the store it was delivered to? so it wouldn't matter where you bought it?
also, when people say they eat it in moderation, why would that matter? something either is contaminated or it's not, so you would get sick or you wouldn't just based on one time.
it's not like mercury in fish. you do not want to eat an abundance of fish high in mercury because it's the build up of mercury that is bad, not just the one time eating something with mercury.
i'm honestly just trying to get a better understanding to make my own decision.

Yup... Didn't eat it with either of my girls and won't with this pregnancy .....ob said no....of course I miss it but im a worry wort and I don't take risks ever lol so to me i agree with the above poster it's not a moderation thing if that one time u eat it & u are unlucky and your cold cuts were contaminated that's that ....u might say that other foods could be contaminated with different kinds of bacteria but listeria is one that is fatal for a baby ...that's all I have to hear nine months is not that long in the grand scheme of things

Im pretty certain it does not happen in production but sitting out in a deli. Or in a produce market.

this, usually from coming on contact with other contaminated products OR more likely, on the slicer.

I used to eat cold cuts almost every day when pregnant. I got them from reputable busy places with high turnover. I couldn't make myself insane or my pregnancy would have been more miserable for me than it already was.

There is a huge scandal going on in the US right now with Sushi and it being not labled right. People are being served the crap fish instead of sushi grade. My husband won't even eat it right now. Unless you are getting your sushi from a huge place that buys the whole fish then you could be eating something other than what you are paying for. I wouldn't risk it. And I eat cold cuts and shell fish, just not sushi.....

I eat them, but personally I would be hesitant about sandwiches ordered by my company. I don't know where they got them and I don't know how long they have been sitting out. But then again I couldn't have them anyway because I am gluten free, but if I could I don't know if I would.
Listeria doesn't have anything to do with if something was sitting out. It is the machine that they were cut on

Then why did my doctor tell me that??? She specifically said not to eat cold cuts that are over five days old and to avoid them if they are out of the fridge for awhile...

I only eat turkey and I always get it grilled/pressed. I am dying for an Italian sandwich and with the 2nd trimester ending soon I may have one.

My doctor also told me that cold cuts sitting out is a concern. He also told me that soft cheese left sitting out (like fresh mozzarella floating in water for days at a deli) is a concern.

Re: Cold cuts
I don't eat them. My OB said not to and its just not worth it. Cold cuts is not a moderation thing like tuna. Tuna you can have once and awhile because of mercury levels but with listeria you only need to eat something once that is contaminated and there are devastating effects. Of course its a personal choice but why risk it
