Blood work for DC not gaining weight?

Our DD (almost 9 months) is a peanut and very skinny and only in the 5th percentile. We have had a wait-and-see approach but she is also a bad spitter-upper and now I am getting concerned. Our ped wants me to bring her for a blood panel this week to rule out some possibilities. If your DC had this done around this age what was involved? Did they get blood from the heel or through a butterfly? We brought DD to Good Sam for a blood test when she was jaundiced as a newborn and they were very good but is there anywhere else that they are GREAT with infants?

We are also bringing her to Dr. Kessler for a GI consult next week.

my friends just went thru this and they first took their son to a lab and said it was horrible - they ended up telling them to stop and made an appointment with Stonybrook hospital to get his blood drawn. He was a little older but they took it from his arm.

wanted to add that they were much happier with the hospital. I think they had more experience with young children then the lab.

My DD is below the 5th percentile for weight, she has hovered around the 5th and 3rd percentile since 7 months (she's just shy of 15 months now). She doesn't spit up much anymore, but did when she was under 6 months, so we just go with it. She eats a ton.

Although, we've never had blood work done for that she had to get blood drawn twice due to a kidney infection. Both blood draws were done in the hospital. The first one was easy peasy. The nurse was awesome! The second one they couldn't get until we had a NICU nurse come down. She was the 6th person to try! I'd def. stick with the hospital for blood draws and ask (not sure if its an option)if a NICU nurse is available? Both blood draws were from a butterfly. I'm assuming they will need a vial at least to run tests which probably means a heel prick isn't an option, but I'm not sure. Good luck! Hope you get some answers soon.

I don't have experience with that specifically, but I wanted to suggest Stonybrook also. We had to take DD there at a week old to get her newborn screening redone. The woman in admitting gave us the name of a man we should request. I'm sorry I don't remember his name, but maybe you could call and ask. She said he's the absolute best with babies and they've had people come all the way from CT for him!

I don't have advice about the weight gain but do NOT take her to LIJ lab's in bethpage (next to Singletons). My DS has blood work every 2 months and they take it straight from his arm ( I think they have to because they are testing his thyroid). They are TERRIBLE. The last time I was there a women in the waiting room was urging me to leave and go somewhere else because they have trouble with getting blood from babies. When I took my DS in it took them FIVE tries and they were nasty. They weren't calming him down, they wouldn't let both my DH and I in the room and they were making rude comments to each other.

I was very happy with Good Samaritian hospital when they took my daughter's blood. I requested someone who was good at taking someone that youngs blood.

Thanks, I was happy with Good Sam too but just wanted to make sure I shouldn't be going somewhere else.

Do you mind me asking if your DD was small when she was born? Our DD was 8lb 3 oz and went from 52nd percentile to 10th and now to 5th. I can see her rib cage through her back Chat Icon.

my dd has been under the 5th percentile for 7 months now. She is 17 months and about 20 lbs. She was born small at only 5 lbs but by 6 months she was at the 50th%. The peds have been concerned and have her still on 3 bottles a day and pediasure high calorie shakes daily. The shakes def helped her gain some weight. I am honestly not sure why they are so concerned. She eats A LOT and when we go out with other kids it's obvious she eats much more than them. She is developing fine mentally and physically but i also see all her ribs and not sure what to do. I go back soon and they may ask for blood work as well....

My DD had bloodwork done for another reason at Southside Hospital. The lab there was fantastic and obviously used to dealing with young children. I would stick to a hospital where they do this every day. Good luck!

Re: Blood work for DC not gaining weight?

I have two DDs and both are small around 10% and 5% weight.
At 18 mo check up my 1st DD had dropped a little on her weight, I think because I had stopped BF which was so many extra calories that she had been getting and then stopped. We did bloodwork to rule out any problems.
We went to Good Sam lab and had no problems. We have had to bring girls there on a few occasions and had no issues.

My DD is 3 and is also low on the weight charts. She had severe reflux (spit up badly all the time and rejected eating) as an infant and we saw a GI specialist. She had a slight milk allergy and was put on Zantac and Alimentum. The reflux can be a contributor to low weight. There are many other possible causes and the medical ones should be ruled out first. There is a condition known as "failure to thrive" which broadly describes this problem. I hope you get the answers you need from the medical professionals.

Thank you all for the advice.

I am beginning to think that it is refulx. She has been coughing and then spits up really badly (both her bottle and food) and now she has started refusing food before even trying it so it could be that it bothers her to eat and that's why she doesn't want to.

I am sure I am being overly cautious but I have to trust my gut.
