What an absolute bigot. What town was it in?
The house is in Lindenhurst.
My other house that I am in contract for is also in Lindenhurst. Just a hop skip away (5 blocks) from this woman's house. When I move into my new house and should she still live there maybe I'll wander around her block until she sees me.
I would walk by casually and if she was outside, wave and say very sweetly- we almost bought your home but you were too much of a racist to sell it to us. And gee, here I am living 5 blocks away.
I really would say this but regret it later that I gave her the time of day.

Re: Our obsession with the house that "got away"
Why did the RE agent tell you that. By telling you that she actually put her license on the line. I would report the agent, either she will say she lied to you, which is unethical, or she will admit to saying that.
I would never work with a re agent that condones that. By telling you this now, is implying she knew then and she actually condoned it and now you are buying a house through her and paying her.
Please report the agent.

Its her right to be ignorant, but it sure is sad. And I wouldn't want her house to sell! I think you are way to generous.
Do you have a pet? I take my pet there all the time to poop on her lawn and leave it! It might feed her 'image' but I feel good leaving the POOP on her crappy house.

Re: Our obsession with the house that "got away"
It is called the Fair Housing act and this is illegal!!!!
The reason I know this is because is an attorney who writes newsletters pertaining to this...
There was just an agency in the five towns that was just fiend for this exact thing....

Re: Our obsession with the house that "got away"
Oh my God, I am so sorry you were treated that way! What she did was most definitely illegal, not to mention disgusting! As for the real estate agent, their job is to get the best offer (money wise) for their client, end of story, if they are playing a role in the discrimination, they can lose their license, and the entire office may even be shut down! There is an agency that tests real estate offices, they will pose as clients to see if any discrimination going on - I wish I could remember the name of it!!! If I do, I'll definitely post it here. I truly hope that kharma does it job! All the best to you with your house search!

Re: Our obsession with the house that "got away"
How does the owner know the race of the buyers? We have never met the owners of our house so the realtor would have to tell them. If that is the case in your situation I would definitely report the realtor.

my Dad said he doesn't care who buys his house - he's moving
but while the what the lady did is gross- the only way it's illegal is it the real estate agent refused to show you houses in certain neighborhoods b/c of your race, religion or ethic background
I was thinking the same thing, I can't imagine that they can do anything to this homeowner. It is terrible though, but LI is so segregated, just the way it is I guess

When we went to see the house it was still an exclusive of the real estate. Our re agent showed us the house and the home owner was inside. We were like the first ones to see it so when we made an offer, she knew it was us.
As for the other guy, the black man, she found out he was black when he ad already made an offer and he came back to take a second look before upping his offer.
This woman is older and she was always home. She didn't follow us around when we looked but she knew who was looking at the house. I don't think it has anything to do with our re agent. Her fault would prob be that she didn't tell us earlier.

Re: Our obsession with the house that "got away"
This happens ALL the time...
I had friend that are Spanish and wanted to buy a home in Floral Park...they kept asking questions like can you afford it, etc. once they found out that they were Spanish. They were approved and everything. It got to the point they said who would want to live in that neightborhood anyway. They ended up with a MUCH better home in Massapequa.
I know my neightborhood is like this too. When we moved into our apt before this one it was know that many of the neighbors went up to our landlord and said who he should and shouldn't rent to.
