Dumb question about pregnancy length
Ok, I am probably going to kick myself for asking this b/c I am probably making myself look very dumb but here goes. Can someone please explain to me why they say pregnancy lasts 9 months when really it's 10

Re: Dumb question about pregnancy length
Haha...and see, I can't see why anyone (ETA...and I don't mean you...a lot of people say this) thinks it's 10 months when it's really 9. Take my last pregnancy for example... LMP: 1/25 (and I got pregnant actually in February) Birth: 10/26 That's nine months in my book. There is no other realm where that is considered 10 months.

Same here
I think some people say 10 months because they think 40 weeks @ 4 weeks per month = 10 months, but that's obviously not true since Feb is the only month with only 4 weeks. All other months are 4 weeks and 2 or 3 days.
Pregnancy is 9 months long

Re: Dumb question about pregnancy length
You know, I realize what people do. 40 weeks divided by 4 weeks per month = 10 months. But only February is 4 weeks, every other month is 4 weeks and change. Otherwise we'd have 13 months in a year instead of 12. So it's 40 weeks but it's 9 months.

Re: Dumb question about pregnancy length
I just consider there to be (on average) 4 weeks in a month and at 40 weeks... that is 10 months. Even this pregnancy calendar shows 10 months... link

Re: Dumb question about pregnancy length
at the end of 40 weeks you've completed the 9th month so for many its closer to 10 months...

Except, it's not. On average, a month is 4 weeks and 2.5 days.
NO month except Feb is 4 weeks. Ever. Not even on average

Got that part. But if someone said to me, how many weeks are in a month- to round off I would say 4, not 5. I get the math behind it, I guess I just figured it's closer to 10 than 9. Thanks for the info ladies.

Re: Dumb question about pregnancy length
I always think of it as 9 months- 9 CALENDAR months. So if my last period was Jan 1st, I would be 3 months pregnant on April 1st, even though I would be 13 weeks. It makes more sense when you think of it in terms of calendar months.
Same thing with trimesters- every 3 calendar months is a new trimester.

Re: Dumb question about pregnancy length
this was the exact thought in my head as i tossed & turned last night! I was trying to rationalize & figure it out. (And i have to say im with you on the 10 month thing.. )
This is what ive come up with... first 4 weeks are sort of a wash...AF, BD, 2WW (then BFP). So that leaves 36 weeks (9 months)...lol
But my ultimate stupid question... how do you count months? I'm 10 weeks...so is that 2 1/2 months? If so, that means that when my DD Aug 30th comes around at 40 weeks I'm 10 months....
Oh I wish I got more sleep last night.

Re: Dumb question about pregnancy length
the thing is you have completed 9 months to your 40 week mark- if you go into 41 or 42 weeks, then it is 10 months. Supposedly it is based on a lunar month, not a calendar month- so weird..

Re: Dumb question about pregnancy length
it is 9 complete months when you hit the 40 week mark. When you pass the 40w mark, you are considered 'in the 10th month' so thats where you get confused. I went 6 days past my edd and told people i was 10m preg 6 day truly seems like a full month when you have a 9 lb baby in you!

Re: Dumb question about pregnancy length
Because OBs go by lunar months which is every 4 weeks. My preg app does this. At 32 weeks it says 8 months.
