Neighbor's Pool
The people directly behind us have a pool. They have not used it at all this season, the pumps aren't on and it is not completely full. However, the cover is off, has been off for months and there is definitely some stagnant water in there. We have had a crazy amount of mosquitoes in that area of our yard and I suspect it is coming from there. What can I do about this? I guess I could go around the block and talk to them about it but I would assume they know it is an issue since it is their backyard.

I would contact the town about it for sure. Don't go to them. They obviously know the situation already.

Call town hall and explain. They will point you in the right direction.

for the time being... if the mosquitos are a real pain.... get some mosquito dunks (tablets) and just throw them in there with out them knowing! :)

Thanks, never heard of these and they look relatively safe too. I'll have to check it out.

in my town Code Enforcement deals with pools...there is an ordinance against this type of thing.

Ok I'll call town hall and see what they tell me tomorrow. I hate to be that neighbor because we only have a 4 foot tall chain link fence seperating us and they will know who called but our safety is more important.

i know TOH has a mosquito hotline. i called it last year and they came out the next day. maybe your town has something similar

In case anyone else has a similar issue and is in suffolk County, you can call the Suffolk county mosquito control at 631- 852-4272. I left a message on the West Nile hotline last night, they just called me back and directed me to this number. They do not open until 9am, so I have to call in a half hour or so.
ETS: I spoke with someone at the mosquito control number. They were very short with me but said they should have someone at the house in a day or so. They will inspect the pool and instruct the owners to either drain it or take steps to control the mosquito problem. She said if I do not see any change in two weeks to call back and they will take further steps. I have a feeling this is going to be a long road. I may just take AndrewZ's advice and get some of those mosquito dunks..

That's great info to have on hand. West Nile Virus IS present on Long Island and standing water / mosquitos are a HUGE health hazard for humans and other animals.
I hope they get it cleared up!

Nassau County Department of Public Works (DPW) is responsible for mosquito control. This includes monitoring and treating with larvicides, when appropriate, thousands of street basins, sumps, ponds and hundreds of miles of fresh water streams; checking suspect breeding sites for the presence of larvae; and maintaining “ditches” on the county’s south shore which allow fish to reach and consume mosquito eggs, larvae and pupae. DPW will continue aerial applications of larvicide in the non-populated areas in the south shore salt marshes as needed to control populations of salt marsh mosquitoes.
Nassau County Department of Public Works (DPW) reponds to mosquito or stagnant water problems. To report a problem, please phone DPW's Mosquito Control Unit at:
