Re: opinions needed

Just be honest - say how much you appreciate the fence and the privacy it offers but you're house poor for a little bit. Be as nice and honest as possible. Then don't go out and buy a Benz.

Technically it would be his fence though - I am assuming he's putting it up on the other sides of his property too - not just yours.

Re: opinions needed

I'm with the other posters - just let him know it's not in your budget. It would be his fence, and he gets to pick the style, so why should you pay half?

I think it's nervy of your neighbor to even ask. He wants to put a fence up now, he should pay for it. Sure, it's nice you'll get some added privacy but it's still going to be his fence.

I agree with the other posters and just say that this is not in your budget at this time.

If YOU want a Benz that is your choice IMO. Regardless he asked you can say no. If you cant afford it or don't WANT to afford that is your choice Chat Icon

Re: opinions needed

If the fence is on his own property, it's HIS fence and it's ridiculous that he even asked you to pay!

Re: opinions needed

I don't believe in this sharing fence idea that people have. its his fence and on his property. WHat happens when he moves and the new neighbor takes the fence down or changes it....you are out the money.

Just tell him no and I don't think an elaborate explanation is necessary.

I would be as nice and possible and just say it's not in your budget. I would never in a million years ask my neighbor to help fund something that I want to do. Ridic IMO.

Since he is putting this up around his entire property, I'm assuming there are 2 other houses that the fence will affect. Is he asking these neighbors to chip in, too?? If so, I'm wondering how much HE is going to end up paying for HIS fence.

Re: opinions needed

i dont see why you need to pay for half. the only time I could see this is if he asked you or other neighbors if they wanted to get a fence for their yards as well and sharing in the cost so you all save money. 6 of the houses around my dad did that, they all went in and got their fence at the same time and saved money, they also only had to then put up one fence instead of each neighbor putting up their own and having 2 touching (if that makes sense)

i would say no !

That's pretty ballsy. It's his fence and it's technically going to be on his property even if you're "sharing it", no? I think he's being cheap and trying to pass some of the cost on to you. You have no obligation to him.

I was wondering that too-i almost wanted to ask the other nieghbors. I believe he doesn't speak to one of them, so I am sure they won't be chipping in. I am telling him no. I am not working this summer, and we have other things to pay for. I don't even have any living room furniture yet.

See I dont think it is nervy at all, this happens all of the time! The neighbor doesnt want money for the whole fence, just the side that sits between the 2 properties.

I do however feel that you can say no, you definitely do not have to put money towards it. I'm sure he would understand since you are a new homeowner.

Re: opinions needed

I feel like the fence benefits both houses so it should be shared. You have every right to say no if you can't afford it, but you are benefiting from a new fence just as much as your neighbor. I think it's a cop out to say it's on his property, the houses where I live are so close it would be really weird not to have a fence, so why should one house have to eat the expense because it's on "their" property.
Now if you have an acre plus of property you don't need a fence, but a 60 X 100 lot, a fence is needed unless you have no problem having your neigbors see everything you do.

Re: opinions needed

I'd never ask someone for money for something I CHOOSE to put up. To me that is bullsh*t.
