DH and I are going to a fancy steakhouse for dinner tonight - walking distance from our apt (maybe a 2 minute walk). There is a crazy amount of snow and it continues to come down hard.
We're both going to dress up pretty nice... but what do we do about the walk? I have rubber rainboots but do I swap out for heels at the restaurant, and if so, what do I do with my boots? (All I can really think of is put them in a shopping bag and coat check them with my coat?) I've done the shoe-swap before with flats that fit in my speedy, but never with gigantic boots!

I would do exactly what you suggested. Bring a large tote or shopping bag and check them with your coat.
