What would YOU have done?

The decision has already been made, so this is pointless, but I'm curious to see how you all feel, since I was the odd man out amongst my family, husband and contractor...

We have a nice sized master bedroom with two smallish closets—one average size (mine), the other very small (my husband's).

The very small closet butts into the bathroom, removing the closet would enable us to make our nice sized bathroom even bigger. This would allow us to put in a large double vanity and a large linen closet, but would mean only one closet in the master.

Would you lose the very small closet in the bedroom to gain a larger bathroom?

As a buyer, would you be impressed by a large, open bathroom with a lot of visual impact, a double sink and a huge closet? Or would you be too preoccupied with the fact that there's only one small closet in the master?

I would defintley get rid of the closet. You can always get another dresser, mans chest, etc. to put your clothes in. I would rather the additional space in the bathroom in my opinion.

Re: What would YOU have done?

I'm of the opposite opinion - you can never have enough closet space and home stagers will tell you to make the items in your closet sparse so the closet looks like it will hold more. If the bathroom is already a decent size, nice and spacious, why make it bigger and lose what seems to be minimal closet space to begin with. Having another chest or dersser doesn't help not having room to hang suits, dresses, shirts, etc. When we were looking at houses one negative for us was bad closet options.

ITA.

Actually, a big selling point for us was the closet space. To me, more closet space= more room to grow. If there's very limited clsoet space, even if the bathroom is gorgeous, i still feel like i'd outgrow the house too soon. When i saw the walk in closet in my MBR, i was sold.

Totally agree!! Closet space is huge, especially since DH wears khakis and button-downs for work and I have suits.

Re: What would YOU have done?

It would depend on how big the master bedroom was. If I was able to get all my furniture in there and add an armoire, then it wouldn't be a big deal.

Agreed. Our master bedroom has one large closet that we share and one small closet that's mine plus a linen closet.

We had to add a large dresser for more storage and it's still not enough. Even though typically I would say to improve the bathroom, since it's already a good size, I'd leave the space in the mater bedroom.

Ditto. Plus, closets are fairly easy to build. I plan on building a bigger closet in our master b/r. Should only take a day or two, and very little material. Expanding a bathroom after the fact is $$$ Chat Icon

Re: What would YOU have done?

I would totally go for the bathroom space. I hate my master bathroom and wish there was a way to make it bigger.

Re: What would YOU have done?

Thanks everyone for the input. I was the one who didn't want to get rid of the closet (closet space is precious in my book), but it really wasn't much of a closet and we are gaining a bigger closet in the bathroom and a double vanity, so it's gone.

When the time comes to sell, I think we will build a second closet out of an outcove we have in the bedroom in order to make the house more appealing to buyers. But I love the outcove, so I'm leaving it for now.

Thanks again to all who replied.
