Let's talk heartburn....
And I'm not talking occasional heartburn that Tums can help. I mean, every day, killer heartburn that laughs when I ingest Tums. It has me in tears it gets so bad.
What can I do? My midwife is sending me some remedies to try. Sometimes it is related to overeating... Other times I wake up at 5am with it and I haven't eaten in 10 hours. It is soooo bad.
I am starting to become a miserable person that hates pregnancy and I hate that. I tried so hard and went through so much to get here and now I am utterly misearble. The heartburn is taking over my life. And if it isn't that something else is in pain, not uncomfy.. PAIN (round ligament, my arm cramps up really bad--- what the heck is that?, my back hurts... it just doesn't end.)
I am only 20 weeks and I feel like I am turning into one of those women who only has one kid because pregnancy was so awful and I hate myself for that...
If I could just get this heartburn under control I would feel so much better. PLease help.
The only thing that helps sometimes is a little vanilla ice cream but, that isn't healthy.

I heard chewing gum for a few minutes helps - I tried it and it worked for me.

Re: Let's talk heartburn....
I had such sever heartburn and acid reflux that I would throw up from it. Tums would actually induce the vomiting.
I HAVE to take pepcid AC twice a day or I DIE. The dr said it is fine as well as zantac(75 i think).
Even with the pepcid, I STILL wake up in the middle of the night with it a lot and need to keep a glass of milk in the fridge so I can get up and drink a little bit. That is the only thing that instantly helps, and I NEVER drank milk other than in cereal before I was pregnant cause I hate it so much, so you can see the desperation....

Re: Let's talk heartburn....
I had it really bad with DD but my OB recommended tums or zantac but neither one cut it. I haven't really had it much with this one - until recently and now it is really starting up. My OB just recommended galviscon this time. I still have to pick it up and try it.

Re: Let's talk heartburn....
Also.. I havent had italian food or anything spicy for my entire pregnancy and found that if I DONT eat for an extended period of time it gets worse, so try to have small meals throughout the day. If there if something in my stomach I guess the acid gets "absorbed"

Re: Let's talk heartburn....
Tums is like a joke.
I graduated to Pepid, then to Zantac and Malox. And now I take prescription Nexium-- one a day.
At first the Nexium was a godsend, but now at the end, it doesn't do much to help.

Hi Tricia- I just read in a magazine will I was waiting at the OB that honey will help. There were two other suggestions but of course they went right out of my brain. Have you tried to google natural heartburn remedies and seee if any of them work.
Good luck. I hope it gets better!

Re: Let's talk heartburn....
Did you try Zantac?? i have to take it 2 times a day and usually it works well. i'm at the point where i have to take it before it starts b/c it was so bad. the doctor actually recommends that and said its perfectly fine to take it 2 times a day to prevent it from even starting.

Re: Let's talk heartburn....
My heartburn just started and it is not fun at all! I feel like I am constantly gagging on my stomach acids and/or my last drink. I've been taking Tums and Pepsid but I don't feel like it has been helping. Glad to know that I am not alone.

Chewing gum actually increases stomach acids. I live on Pepcid 20 mg in the AM, 20mg in the PM. I had HORRIBLE reflux prior to pregnancy and it is just as bad now. I have been on all sorts of RX and the pepcids are the best.

Yes, chewing gum has made my heartburn worse. I think the saliva mixed with the gum flavor was mixing with my stomach acids.
Can you recommend other RX that you have tried? Pepsid just isn't cutting it for me.

Nexium Aciphex
Both were blah, up your dosafge of the pepcid, if you are doing 10mg take 20 instead.

Re: Let's talk heartburn....
Eat small meals every few hours, the reason you are getting heartburn at 5am is because your stomach is empty so the acid starts working and poof heartburn also sleep with your head elevated, it will help keep the acid down. Drink milk, sit up right for at least 30 minutes after eating….stay way fro Caffeine, citrus, tomatos, chocolate etc.
And if it best bad there are prescriptions that are safe for you to take.
I will say as someone we had the maximum dose of tums every day for about 6 months, the MINUTE they pulled my DS out…I felt instant relief and haven’t had an episode of heartburn since!!

My doctor told me I could take Zantac 75 twice per day. It helped tremendously.

Re: Let's talk heartburn....
omg, i feel for you, heartburn is SO BAD
during my last pregnancy zantac was a LIFESAVER. maybe give that a try?
i would also continue eating a little vanilla ice cream if it alleviates the discomfort... even if it leaves you with a few extra pounds at the end, at least you weren't totally miserable for your pregnancy! jmo.

Re: Let's talk heartburn....
I have/had horrible reflux and it was aggrevating my MS early on as well...My midwife reccomended a whole bunch of herbal remedies...they didn't do CRAP
Finally I had my primary prescribe pepcid when I went in one day with a cold....
I still get the reflux every once in a while so I no longer eat/drink
nothing carbonated nothing with tomatoes/ tomatoe sauce no vinegar anothing really acidic like lemonade etc.
When Its bad I usually drink a glas of ovaltine and it may or may not help
Chewing gum makes it worse for me, drinking water makes it worse as well
Feel better!

I had SUCH SEVERE heartburn my entire pregnancy, and I lived on Pepcid AC two times a day. Tums were a joke and did absolutely nothing. I swear my heartburn was the reason why I only gained 14lbs this pregnancy. I wasn't physically ABLE to eat anything.
Now that Gianna is born? The heartburn was gone INSTANTLY. It was a friggin miracle. Now that I am able to eat, I don't have time to! (let's see how long THIS lasts!!!)

Interesting. I actually had heartburn the other night and threw up too. I had just drank a glass of milk right before I yacked So, later I began to run a fever and I thought it was a very mild stomach virus. But, mabye it wasn't???
But the heartburn does make me really queazy.

Re: Let's talk heartburn....
if the vanilla ice cream helps for instant relief try a little bit of milk or silk's "very vanilla" soy milk. it's super creamy but has less calories than vanilla ice cream so it might be something to have on hand when you're waiting for meds to kick in or need a bit of relief fast.
