For those w/ 2 dogs..

So I am a newlywed and I currently have a 4 lb Pomeranian, Tinkerbell, who is my love. She is the greatest dog. I work from home so I am home alot and recently I have been hearing about rescue dogs and dogs that need homes and it hurts my heart. i have always thought about getting another dog but I am not sure? Is it easy to manage? I just feel that I could provide such a loving home....another thing is that Dh and I want to start a family someday...not right now but in the near future...is it tough with kids?? any advice is much appreciated!

At first it was differcult for us, but we got into a routine and it was a lot better. You just have to prepare yourself. I didn't think it would be as hard as it was, but I think because they didn't get along was the hardest part of it. Now it's a piece of cake. I love them both and wouldn't change anything. Good Luck!

See that's what I worry about. The dogs not getting along. Its adorable when they play or cuddle...so it's harder then you thought?? Yikes!

Re: For those w/ 2 dogs..

Hey Zoe, I also had one dog- Chip a pomeranian, but he was home alone all day while we were at work. I felt so bad he spent all that time alone and wanted to get him a buddy to keep him company. Also, when we would get home, Chip would be a maniac and in our faces the whole time- made it very hard to do things or relax.

So, we got Hunter, another pomeranian. Our breeder watches Chip when we're away and when we went to pick him up after a trip she was saying how Chip and Hunter were together the whole time- playing together and never leaving eachother's side. Hunter had an injury as a puppy and so had a bad hip. She couldn't sell him so she said we could adopt him if we wanted to (he was 8 mths at the time). We thought he was sweet and since they got along it would be perfect! We took him for a trial weekend and they were great togther so we decided to keep him.

I will say it is more work, especially since they go on wee wee pads. It took some time for Hunter to learn where the pads are and he still has issues. Also it took some time for me to warm up to Hunter. Chippy is my baby and I had a hard time sharing my attention with another dog. But now I love him as much as Chip and Chip is so much more relaxed and happy now. When they are apart, they look for eachother, they watch out for eachother, it's adorable. If it wasn't for the bathroom issues, it would be perfect!

Most rescue places require a trial period anyway, so if the dog doesn't get along with Tinkerbell, than you can probably give them back.

Godd luck!

Oh good to hear! I am in the exact situation! Tinky is my baby, but I feel that I could provide such a good home for a rescue dog. I've seen a few poms that need homes. I just go back and forth. I was blessed with tinkerbells good temprament and wouldn't want one that was bad, or barked too much. Tinkerbell does not...but I guess its hard to tell till you try!

I have to add that Hunter is a barker, we're still working around that. Chip is very quiet, but Hunter is a yappin pom! Also, since he was 8 months when we got him, he's not really with the commands that Chip knows so well, so it's frustrating. But all in all, it's still great.

Re: For those w/ 2 dogs..

if you get one, now is the time while your dog is still young and active. When they get older, sometimes they don't have "alot in common" with the puppy.

We got our 2nd dog when our first was about 3. It was a great age for the 1st one...she is his boss.....even now that he has 20 lbs on her.

They fight, but they work it out. There was/is some jealousy from time to time. I didn't let the new puppy sleep in our room until he was over a year..he was in his crate until then. So she had her own space away from him .

Re: For those w/ 2 dogs..

I had no choice but to do it, when my dh and I got married he had a chow mix and I had a Lhasa, then we adopted a Labradoodle that desperately needed a home. It all worked out, then the chow mix had to be put down and we decided to keep only 2 - until - Foxy wandered up to our door abused and needing medical attention and a home.

It just works, they all get used to each other and I don't really feel the difference, feed one, two or three.

But, I will say they are the loves of my life. I wouldn't trade having all of them for anything, the interaction is great for us and them.

Agreed. The beginning was very difficult, trying to get them used to each other, wondering if/when they'd ever be friends, and if we'd done the right thing. But all it took was time - since then, it's been wonderful! You definitely have an advantage since you work from home and can "referee" if need be.

I dont have any kids yet but we have 2 dogs. they are best buddies to, its the sweetest thing. I have a pug and a black lab. they wait for each other to go outside, and they wait for the other one before they come back in the house. And my black lab gets sting beans every night with his dinner and he always takes a few out puts them on the floor for the pug (who stands right next to him when he eats) its the cutest thing.

We had the pug first and added the black lab that was a resuce dog from a shelter. I did bring the pug to the shelter to meet the lab before we took him home to make sure neither of them wiuld be aggressive towards each other and they were fine.

Good luck if you decide to get another dog!!

How old was the pug when you introduced the lab to it? Were you worried about the size difference?

Good luck if you decide to get another dog!!

Re: For those w/ 2 dogs..

I agree with everyone else. Once you get into a routine, it's not bad.
We got an older dog(older than my 1st), but he wasn't potty trained. That was the most difficult thing. Once we got that taken care of, everything else was good.
I must say getting a 2nd dog wasn't as big of a step as getting the 1st. It's not twice the work as 1 dog, just a little more.

Re: For those w/ 2 dogs..

We have two dogs, both puppies, both under a year old.

We adopted Arnold from the shelter when he was 8 weeks old. We then adopted Shelby at 10 weeks old 4 months later.

We were very lucky, from day one the dogs got along famously and have been best friends ever since.

At times it's certainly a three ring circus in our house as they LOVE to run around like little lunatics but then I usually shoe them out the door so they can play in the back yard.

I can honestly say it was the BEST thing we did for Arnold. We both work and while I do come home everyday to let them out at lunch we still felt bad that he was home alone. Now with Shelby on the scene it's great. They play together, they sleep together they eat and do their business together!!! Chat Icon It really was the best decision we made.

I think the key element to them getting along is that Arnold (the older one) is VERY laid back. He gets along SUPER well with other dogs and so when we introduced Shelby to him, they got along fine. Then we took her home and that day they were playing and eating and drinking out of each others bowls with no issues.

To this day, they eat each others food, drink each other's water and play with the same toys. There is absolutely NO aggression.

Did I mention they're both pit mixes?

So really, IMO it depends on the dog that's currently living in your home. Is she good with other dogs? Is she possessive? These are the things you need to look at.

Oh and the other thing I've come to learn is that while the people at the shelter mean well, sometimes they turn a blind eye to the temperment of their dogs so you really need to have your dog visit their dog and spend some time together to really get an idea of how they will get along.

At any rate, I think getting a second dog is a great idea!!!

Good luck and if you have any other questions feel free to FM me!

I think the pug was 3 and the black lab was 2 but still a complete puppy, so hyper. They really did well. Don't get me wrong it took work, but it was fine in the end.Chat Icon now they are best of friends!
