Curiosity about Clomid.
Is there any negative side effect to taking Clomid or any reason not to want to take it? I'm just curious, esp since I just had a m/c with very low progesterone levels. From what I've read about Clomid, it sounds like it would help us ovulate with an extra healthy/strong egg. What is the down side?
I have an appointment with my doctor next week, and will talk to her then, but any info you have in the meantime is much appreciated.
Thanks!

Re: Curiosity about Clomid.
There is a lifetime max you can take Clomid. You should not take clomid unless your doctor will monitor you properly (bloodwork, ultrasounds). It will not help your progesterone levels though. If you had a m/c due to low progesterone, then you should have your blood drawn at 7dpo to check your progesterone levels and you should be on progesterone suppositories. I would go that route before introducing fertility drugs to your body.

Thank you for this information, I really don't know much about it. What does it mean that there is a "lifetime max"? Meaning you can only take it a certain number of times?

Yes its 12 months. However most doctors will stop you after 6 consecutive months. Too much use of clomid will cause your uterine lining to thin. Clomid in most cases will cause your.CM to dry up.

Re: Curiosity about Clomid.
I took it for 2 months and got pregnant, but miscarried at about 5 weeks - but the more I think about it, it could have very well been a chemical. But then I started seeing my RE and month 1 back on clomid, 1 got pregnant, I am now almost 7 weeks. It works for so many people, but I would not take it without being closely monitored.

Yes, it helps many women... but according to the OP her problem was a progesterone issue. Taking Clomid will not help with her progesterone issue.

Clomid improves the developing egg and follicle. It also improves the quality of the corpus luteum, the area in the ovary from where the egg comes from. The corpus luteum is responsible for progesterone production. So with Clomid and an improved corpus luteum you often have a higher progesterone level

I'm extreamly well versed on the effects of Clomid, how it works, etc. I've been on a quest to get pregnant for 2 years. I spent 6 months on Clomid and this was never the case. Quite the contrary in my case. I had better progesterone levels PRE Clomid then I did while I was actually on it. All I'm saying is that before subjecting her body to fertility meds, to go with something a little less harsh on her body.
ETA: Everyone is so quick to jump onto the Clomid bandwagon. Why subject yourself to fertility meds when there is no reason? I suggest if you (meaning the OP) suspects there is a deeper issue have your doctor do all necessary testing BEFORE taking any fertility meds.

I appreciate the information you've given, and I'm so sorry for any difficulties you are having. I too have had difficulties. However, to be honest, I really take offense to the comment about everyone being "so quick to jump on the Clomid bandwagon." I was simply asking for information before speaking to my doctor so that I could have as much info as possible when I speak with her. See OP.
First of all, progesterone is not my only "issue" even though it's the only "issue" I mentioned in this post. Second, I have heard a lot about Clomid assisting with a stronger more viable egg and improving the developing follicle, as another poster stated above. Therefore, it is an option I will want to discuss with my doctor so that I can make an educated choice. It's certainly not about jumping on any bandwagon. Having a miscarriage is a terrible thing to endure, and if there is a way I can help myself to have a viable pregnancy on my doctor's advice, I will do it.

Re: Curiosity about Clomid.
I never said or eluded to the fact that you or anyone else was not "well versed"on the topic
I was simply giving information provided by a doctor
AND I prefaced my response with "this is not totally true"; which ALSO means it is not totally FALSE
everyone is also quick to jump on the "youre moving to fast " bandwagon
everyone that has not been successful with clomid is always discouraging people from taking it - just my experience on here

Trust me... I would never tell anyone they are moving too fast. Certainly not given my situation. I WISH I knew then what I know now. And I definately wish there was no need to know what I do. All I'm saying to the OP is to do the necessary testing FIRST before jumping into fertility drugs.
It's great that it worked the first time for you, it really is.
It just really concerns and bothers me that many doctors are quick to just give a script for Clomid and send a woman on her way. Clomid is not a drug to take lightly, and a person should be fully informed of all the pros and cons of taking such a step. Why put hormones into your body if it's not needed?
I'm not looking to argue, as these clomid threads always cause arguements. I'm sharing my knowledge and experience with the OP.
To the OP - I'm so sorry for your previous loss, I've been there multiple times and understand fully what you are going through. I hope you find the answers you need and you have a sucessful and healthy pregnancy soon!

Thank you, and thank you for the information. I definitely have a lot to consider and will make sure I do get all of the testing I need. I've had testing done (about a year ago) and will have them look even deeper this time. I hope you too have a successful and healthy pregnancy soon.

Re: Curiosity about Clomid.
Most of the time, a miscarriage is not caused by low progesterone. What happens is that a "bad" pregnancy (for lack of a better word) causes progesterone to be low. In other words, the low progesterone is a symptom of the pregnancy - not that low progesterone is a cause of a miscarriage. Does this make sense?
I agree with MrsRbk about clomid and its use. You should definitely seek testing, and if progesterone is a suspected issue, then progesterone suppositories would do a better job for you than clomid. Clomid helps you to ovulate, it doesn not produce "better" eggs - it might produce more than one egg, though. It works by blocking estrogen which in turn tells your body to increase FSH. This works for some, but not all. Clomid does have side effects, including hot flashes, dizziness, vision trails, drying of CM and thinning of uterine lining. If you ovulate regularl (and don't have any other reproductive issues), I think you should try to avoid taking fertility medications.

Re: Curiosity about Clomid.
I just want to thank everyone for being able to provide such a wealth of different and valuable information. I think that's what this board is for.
I think that when one person posts something that another person sees as being potentially harmful, they want to save that person from experiencing things that they have unfortunately experienced because they did not know better.
I love that on this board, we each take our experiences and use them to help others make the best and most informed decisions.
I respect everyone's own experiences and points of view on each situation, and although these topics do tend to get heated, it's important to put this information out there for people who are faced with these difficult decisions and might not have all of the knowledge they should from their doctors.
