LEEP and Cervical Cerclage
I had a LEEP back in April 2005. I am currently 13wks pregnant and I'm concerned about having a miscarriage because of the LEEP. I informed my doctor that I had this procedure done and she said she will check my cervix next appointment (17wks).
For those ladies that had a LEEP procedure prior to being pregnant, how did your pregnancy go? Did you get a Cervical Cerclage?
I'm debating on whether I want to tell my doctor that I want to get a cervical cerclage just to be on the safe side.

Re: LEEP and Cervical Cerclage
I had a LEEP years ago and they checked my cervical length at the ultrascreen (about 13wk). They said it was perfectly fine and no cerclage was necessary.

Did you experience any difficulty or premature delivery?

Re: LEEP and Cervical Cerclage
I had 2 LEEP procedures before I became PG. My dr. just watched my cervix extra carefully (I had to be seen every 2 weeks throughout my PG.) I did not need the cerclage, ended up being induced 6 days late and had a c-section.

No, DS was born 10 days early but there was no indication that that was due to the procedure. I had a great pregnancy and extremely easy delivery. DS is very healthy.

Re: LEEP and Cervical Cerclage
I had 2 LEEPS pre pregnancy and am worried for the same reasons...I am currently 12W 2D.
My doc is sending me for frequent u/s to make sure cervix is ok....he discussed a cerclage as a "last resort" as opposed to just careful monitoring at this point.
My doc said as long as they keep a close eye on it, I should be fine.

Re: LEEP and Cervical Cerclage
same here...I had two LEEPS and was checked for cervical length a few times including a vaginal U/S at my level 2.
My ob/gyn had also performed my LEEPS and was very familiar with my case.

Re: LEEP and Cervical Cerclage
I had a LEEP 6 months before I got pregnant. I had no complications and didn't need a cerclage.

I know this is an old post, but I did a search on this b/c this has been one of my biggest concerns once we are PG.
I had LEEP done back in 1999, and although it's been a while, my doctor has informed me that I may have these problems.
But I just wanted to say how happy I am to hear that all of you ladies got through it very well!
Any more feedback will be GREATLY appreciated as well. Feel free to FM as well. (Tina I'd love to know how you're doing too!)
Thank you!

Re: LEEP and Cervical Cerclage
A friend of mine has the cerclage done due to Leep. She has had 3 pgs since then, all healthy fine pgs. As long as you are being monitored, all should be ok.

Re: LEEP and Cervical Cerclage
I did not have a LEEP, I had a conal done in 2003. I got PG through IVF in November and lost the baby due to Incompetent Cervix in March.
My OB said that there is no way at all to predict who will have IC and who won't. He said some people have no problems after having surgery and some people have never had surgery but have IC.
I would ask to be monitored closely, every two weeks or so and if they see any shortening of the cervix to do a cerclage. A cerclage can safely be done up to 22 weeks.
good luck to you!!!

Let me start by saying I'm so sorry to hear about your loss! Thank you for your response and words of encouragement. It does make sense what your OB said; I'm sure everyone is different!
Thank you again and gl to you too!

So only up to 22 weeks? What if there is no change by then, can't it still happen after?
I was told I may need this due to a very low fibroid that may add too much pressure? (i never had a leep or a cone, or anything cervical done, cervix is intact and normal). I was under the impression it would be much later on that I might need the cerclage. I am almost 15 weeks and no special monitoring is being done...My dr is high risk and doesn't seem too worried about this just yet. Told me we will see. I am going week 16 to see him, he better give me an answer by then.

According to my OB...anything after 22 weeks (it may be 24) there is a high risk of catching the sac while doing the cerclage. Before that time the sac is smaller and the cerclage can safely be done. Also, if the cervix does start to shorten and you are being closely monitored, they can put you on bedrest until the baby is ready.
Because of what happened to me, my OB will do a cerclage at 8 weeks in order to avoid the sac all together since it doesn't develop until 12 weeks. But, as I said before, everyone is different and they would rather not do a cerclage at all if it isn't needed.
ETA: Incompentent Cervix usually shows by 20 -22 weeks. That is when the weight of the baby is on the cervix and if it's going to weaken it does it then. If nothing happens by that time, odds are nothing will.

Thanks Gerty. I appreciate it.
When I searched online, it is saying cerclage is usually done b/w 14-16 weeks for best results. Didn't say how late it can be done. And most sites seemed to say that b/w mth 4-6 (weeks 16-24) is when incompetent cervix happens. So that's why I am getting worried now, I am calling my dr tomorrow...
Thanks for sharing.

They only checked it that one time - I didn't have an internal again until I was 36wks along.
