RE Question/Reccomendation

Hi! I posted last month that my ob-gyn felt that DH and I should start fertility testing if we didn't get pregnant that month (our 6th cycle TTC). Unfortunately, we are not pregnant and are taking the next steps. Originally, she recommended having the initial testing done by her at their office.

However, I am now having second thoughts and am considering going straight to a RE. I know it may sound crazy, but my gut tells me that something is off and I am not sure that I want to waste my time at my ob-gyn's office. I do not require any referals to see a specialist. Do you think I should go straight to the RE or should I start the testing with my doctor?

If I decide to go to the RE, can anyone recomend a RE in Manhattan - preferably in midtown or on the east side?

I would go straight to the RE. Your Obgyn would not test you as thoroughly and probably not be as knowledgable about what actions to take. I'm not sure about any REs in Manhattan, although Cornell does have a very good reputation. Good luck to you!

I would recommend either Cornell or SIRM...my SIL got PG with Cornell/my friend with SIRM...

Re: RE Question/Reccomendation

I used RMANY. My Dr was Dr Ruman. I got pregnant on my first IVF with them. I loved my Dr. The practice is VERY busy but I was happy with them. I also liked Dr. Mukherjee. Dr Flisser is nice but kind of stiff. I didn't deal too much with any of the other docs. Dr Riman did my retrieval, Dr M did my transfer and I saw Dr Ruman and Flisser for ultrasounds

Re: RE Question/Reccomendation

I know people won't agree with me, but I might do the initial testing with your ob/gyn to see if they can pinpoint a problem so you can base your RE choice on that...

Certains RE's are known to specialize in different things

Re: RE Question/Reccomendation

I guess i would start with...do you have insurance coverage and you may want to go to someone who is in your network?

I actually started with my gyn/oby. She did my genetic testing panel and sent me for the HSG. And based on that result she recommended an RE for me. Though I did my own research on RE's.

I agree with PP, it may be easier to pinpoint the problem and then find an RE that is known to specialize in that area.

When you find out FM me, because I've been researching RE's b/c I'm going to my 3rd one in July. I didn't leave them because they were bad places, they just couldn't offer me what the next one did.

Re: RE Question/Reccomendation

I absolutly agree. I started my testing with my OB/GYN and she did all the tests that the RE would have done so I didn't lose any time. She was also able to refer us to a Urologist for my husband. So he received the necessary treatment while I was taking care of my testing. The whole series of tests took a total of 8 weeks.

Once I started with the RE the only thing I had to repeat was the blood work and then he just did a "trial transfer" in which he mapped my uterus. Then I was ready to go.

Trust your instincts and head straight to the RE. I did this after 6 months of trying and I don't regret it at all. Cornell is the best in the area. Best of luck!

Re: RE Question/Reccomendation

I would go straight to an RE if your insurance will cover the testing and diagnosis. They are specialists and know best. Why waste time with an OB if you truly end up having an issue.
