Is there any reason to do additional genetic counseling

if DH and I have undergone all of the pre-ivf bloodwork? I would just like to make sure we don't miss an opportunity to do PGD if we need it. DH has polycystic kidneys and low motility/morph. We are definitley doing ICSI I just don't know if PGD is something we need to consider. I am thinking my RE would have mentioned it but I don't know. Does anyone have any thoughts/experience? Thanks!

PGD is very expensive and is not covered by insurance. After my m/c last IVF cycle, we asked the doctor about doing PGD and he assured us it was not necessary. There is a risk to the embryos with doing PGD too, and because of the quality of the embryos they did put back last time, he told us to save our $$ because it wasn't necessary.

We did PGD with our last IVF cycle and we are doing it with our next cycle as well.

It is an additional expense but it was something we both wanted to do.

If you want more info please feel free to fm me.

I think their is a chance you can pass on Polycystic kidney disease. I googled it and found this link.
http://renux.dmed.ed.ac.uk/EdREN/EdRenINFObits/PCKDShort.html

Also I googled PGD and Polysistic Kidney and there are IVF programs that do PGD for polycystic kidney. I know stonybrook has a genetic counselor, I had to meet with them before an amnio. It may not hurt to have an appt and see what the options are, if you can avoid a lifelong disease, pgd is expensive but well worth it if you can avoid a disease. Good luck...

Have you been tested for Cystic Fibrosis and Fragile X? Those are the 2 most common genetic tests done. My regular GYN ordered this for me when I told her I was TTC.

Also, PGD is often used in older women or those with identified inherited diseases.

Thanks so much Elise! I would almost definitely do this if we can avoid polycystic kidney disease. JW you have FM- thanks!

Is that something that if its in one partner it can get passed and be a problem? I know I have tested + for 3 genetic disorders (including CF) but DH is negative (thank goodness for some small miracles). And they told me we'd both have to be carriers for it to be a problem. So we are not doing PGD.

DH has polycystic kidneys so there is a 50% chance than our children could have themChat Icon I pray Anna does not and if I can prevent any other children from having it at all then I definitely want to go that route. When I wrote this post I did not realise that PKD was one of the diseases that could be removed with PGD- so thanks so much girls!
