A long time ago I saw an elderly woman walking down the road. She said she was walking to the bus stop. I asked her if she wanted a ride and she did so I helped her into my truck and drove her there.

Not really hitchhikers, but strangers...
When I went to Queens College, there was NOOOOOOOOOOOOO parking...at ALL!
You would seriously have to park 30 blocks from campus on a good day.
I used to sit at the exit and pick up people to drive them to their car in the hopes they had a good spot. 
It worked! It was a good method.
