Would you pick up a hitchhiker?

I never have.
The other day i was driving on the LIE service road about 1/4 mile before the South Oyster Bay Rd intersection and there was an older man (probably in his 70's) hitchhiking. He was dressed fine, wasn't homeless or anything. After I drove by i kind of felt bad...

Re: Would you pick up a hitchhiker?

no way, NEVER!!

i would be petrified that the hitchiker dressed nicely to lure someone unsuspecting into picking them up.

better safe than sorry, IMO.

No way. It's too dangerous.
Since you mentioned the hitchhiker you saw was older, it would make sense that an older person in their 70's might not have a cell phone, therefore I maybe would stop and roll my window down a crack and ask him if he needed me to call someone for him..aww.. you had good intentions thoughChat Icon

Never.

If someone is stranded and looks like they need help, though, I will call the police to go help them.

Yes, this I have done.

Unless it's Donald Trump. (if any of you recall, he was stranded on the side of the road many, many years ago and someone stopped and helped him and he paid off their mortgage).

Re: Would you pick up a hitchhiker?

No, but I've made phone calls for people who were stranded.

One time during the holidays my sister and I saw the man that I SWEAR looked like Santa Claus.

Re: Would you pick up a hitchhiker?

I have, but it was a mom, dad, and baby on the interstate standing by a broke down car.

My sister has hitch hiked all over the country and Europe. She says a lot of people still do it. Her and her husband pick them up.

Re: Would you pick up a hitchhiker?

I would never, although I do feel bad when I see it because I always wonder about the circumstances.

I lived in Ireland when there was a bus strike and had to hitchhike to school every day for a week. I still haven't told my mother about this. Chat Icon Chat Icon But the traffic was so horrendous that if anyone was going to harm me it would not go unnoticed by others.

It's also illegal in many areas of NY

State Laws on Hitchhiking in New York (NY) (Laws)
Posted on Sat, Apr 3, 2004 by Salman (bio)

New York Laws relating to hitchhiking or pedestrian travel on highways in New York are similar to the Uniform Vehicle Code (UVC), except where it comes to the New York State Thruway.

What this means is: It is technically legal to hitchhike from the shoulder of a road or an on-ramp if no sign is posted prohibiting pedestrians. When it comes to the Thruway- which includes the major highways of I-87, I-90 and I-95- it is not only illegal to hitchhike the shoulder, but also near the entrance to these highways. A hitchhiker must stand outside of the Thruway property.

New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law:

Sec. 1156. Pedestrians on roadways.
(a) Where sidewalks are provided and they may be used with safety it shall be unlawful for any pedestrian to walk along and upon an adjacent roadway.

(b) Where sidewalks are not provided any pedestrian walking along and upon a highway shall when practicable walk only on the left side of the roadway or its shoulder facing traffic which may approach from the opposite direction. Upon the approach of any vehicle from the opposite direction, such pedestrian shall move as far to the left as is practicable.

Sec. 1157. Pedestrians soliciting rides, or business.
(a) No person shall stand in a roadway for the purpose of soliciting a ride, or to solicit from or sell to an occupant of any vehicle.

(c) No person shall occupy any part of a state highway, except in a city or village, in any manner for the purpose of selling or soliciting.

(Legal definition of roadway below)

Vehicle and Traffic Law § 140. Roadway. That portion of a highway improved, designed, marked, or ordinarily used for vehicular travel, exclusive of the shoulder and slope. In the event a highway includes two or more separate roadways the term "roadway" as used herein shall refer to any such roadway separately but not to all such roadways collectively.

Part 102. LIMITATIONS ON USE OF THRUWAY SYSTEM
§ 102.4 Hitchhiking; loitering.
The solicitation of a ride, commonly known as hitchhiking, or stopping any vehicle for the purpose of picking up or discharging a hitchhiker, on any portion of the Thruway system, including toll plazas, is prohibited. Loitering in or about the toll plazas or any other portion of the Thruway system, for the purpose of hitchhiking or for any other purpose, is prohibited.

Re: Would you pick up a hitchhiker?

I once picked up an elderly woman near my parents house. She was standing by her car, she blew a tire and we pulled over to see if she needed help. DH and I drove her the 1/4 mile to her house and she was eternally grateful!
That...is the closest I will ever get to picking up a hitchhiker though!!!
I would never!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Would you pick up a hitchhiker?

I did once when I was in college. I had gone up to the mtns. by myself for the day. I saw a guy and thought to myself "if he's still there on my way back, I'll pick him up" He was so I did and I drove him up to Plattsburgh Chat Icon I have no idea why I decided to do it, but it really was a great day Chat Icon

Re: Would you pick up a hitchhiker?

I find this thread funny, it has been a few, quite a few years now and my car broke down traveling across the country. I called a tow truck and junked the car from the side of the road and started hitchhiking. The longest ride I had, over 400 miles was with 2 young college aged women who were on thier way from NYC to Michigan. I expected old perverts to pick me up, but it wasn't so, normal people all the way.

Never ever! I've watched to many scary movies. No matter how normal someone looks, you just never know.
But I would've felt bad about the old man too. I wouldn't have stopped but I'd have felt bad for him at the same time!
