Re: Would you be offended?

It was a dumb thing to say in the workplace. If it's a close friend who you can joke around with like that, it's one thing, but it was done inappropriately.

I took it as she is already a brown noser she doesn't need to do it anymore then she already does.

Not offensively.

agreed...the same way I took it.

Re: Would you be offended?

Ummm...how can that NOT be taken as a racist, insensitive comment? Your friend should document it. I don't know if she is the only person of color at your work place, but if she is, or one of a few, I can't even imagine how that must have hurt her. The more I think about it, the more it pisses me off. It's totally discriminatory language.

Re: Would you be offended?

I personally think that in a work relationship, if you have ANY question whether or not something is innapropriate, it shouldn't be said, period. I will also say that this is especially true for a person in a supervisory position.

I don't know that the person's comment was about your friend being African American, but if the other people in the room were uncomfrotable about the conversation, she should have censored herself and thought about how someone might have taken offense to what she said.

Now to the poster who said it was kind of funny, is that because the boss said the girl's a kiss up, or because of the girl's race? See what i mean?

the poster clearly states, later in the thread, that the boss who said this and the girl it was said to are NOT friends and are NOT close outside of work - or inside for that matter.

since they are not close i would say that it is inappropriate and better off if the boss didn't say that. i think, also, since it is the workplace it isn't right to say that -- it wouldn't offend me and i don't think it is a huge deal but it should not have been said.
