Would you be offended?

One of my good friends at work is African American. Yesterday my friend did a favor for her boss and brought her back lunch.

Another one of the bosses in my area said to her "Your nose is ALREADY brown, you don't have to do anything else to brown nose!" The room just got quiet (there were several of us there), but I think the boss who said it didn't even realize it was inappropriate. She laughed, and I knew it was meant to be a joke, but the rest of us were offended.

I asked my friend later if she was offended, and she said yes, but that it is uncomfortable having a conversation with a boss about what is appropriate to say to a person of another race. I am so angry for her though; I think it is so wrong.

Sounds like she needs some sensitivity training - totally inappropriate.

ETA: if your friend was offended she should probably go back to the boss and tell him that wasn't nice to say in front of everyone

Re: Would you be offended?

i assume the boss isn't very close with this co-worker? like friends outside of work?

i dunno--i make silly jokes among friends like that cause that's just how we joke--but if the boss and co-worker don't joke like that-- i guess it would be inappropriate.

ETA: forgot to add that i wouldn't be offended. but thats just me

No way would I be offended, but I am really lax about stuff like this.
It was completely innapropriate to say, though.

I took it as she is already a brown noser she doesn't need to do it anymore then she already does.

Not offensively.

Re: Would you be offended?

Im not african american so not sure if i would be offended by it. I always say "hey you got some brown smudge on your nose" to coworkers after they kiss but, would that be offensive? I never thought it was, but then again i never added the "your nose is already brown" to anyone either.

Definitely not friends or close....She said it as a joke I know, but I just don't think it's right to joke around about race like that unless you are really, really good friends and know how the person would feel and react.

I don't think it was a racial comment. It just so happens the term is brown noser. I would have interpreted your boss to mean that your friend kisses up enough she doesn't have to do that anymore.

If she used the term kissing up that may be sexual harassment though so it is probably better that she not make any more jokes.Chat Icon

I don't find it offensive.

Re: Would you be offended?

i take it as brown nosing meaning a kiss azz not based on someones race. it refers to having your nose up the bosses butt. not being african american.

Re: Would you be offended?

i dont think your boss meant it to be offensive but it was definitely inappropriate. people of higher ranking have to watch everything they say these days, you never know who might think it to be racist or discriminatory.

i agree with an AP that she should talk to him/her privately and say that she felt it was inappropriate so that he/she knows its not okay to do in the future. if she lets it go, they may think its okay to carry on that way.
